FrontStreet Coffee - Introduction to Indonesian Coffee Mandheling Arabica Coffee Beans
Indonesian coffee quality is highly diverse, with most coffees marketed by their island of origin, such as Sumatra, Sulawesi, Java, or Timur.
The advantage of Indonesian coffee is that most varieties feature rich, reserved flavors and lively moderate acidity.
Chinese people hold Indonesian Mandheling coffee in extremely high regard, making it one of the most widely accepted single-origin coffee products.
Indonesian Mandheling was once hailed as the world's finest unique wet-hulled coffee beans. Mandheling is a trademarked product. Today, any coffee cherries harvested in Indonesia and processed using this unique wet-hulling method are marketed as Mandheling coffee beans.
Mandheling originated from the Tapanuli region in northwestern Sumatra, where the Mandailing people cultivated coffee. At the end of World War II, a Japanese soldier introduced it to the Japanese market. Due to a pronunciation error, "Mandailing" became "Mandheling" coffee.
Sumatra Island
Sumatra's coffee is exceptionally complex and elusive. Although Sumatra is a large island, not all regions produce coffee. Coffee trees are extensively cultivated only in the two northernmost of the island's eight provinces: Aceh Province and North Sumatra Province.
Aceh coffee is primarily produced around Lake Tawar in the Gayo Mountain region, where most farmers are local Gayo indigenous people. Meanwhile, North Sumatra Province coffee production is centered around Lake Toba (the world's largest super-volcanic crater lake) and the southern Lintong region, where local farmers are predominantly composed of Batak indigenous people.
Due to many small-scale producers and their unique semi-washed processing methods combined with iron-deficient soil, fresh green coffee beans from this region display a distinctive blue coloration.
Flores Island
When we first heard of this coffee, our first question was: "Where is Flores Island?" After a Google search, we discovered that Flores Island is one of the larger islands in Indonesia's Sunda Islands archipelago. It was discovered by the Portuguese in the 15th century and named "Coba da Flores" (Island of Flowers) due to its rich ecosystem and abundant blooming flowers.
The local climate is humid. After preliminary washing and fermentation, the parchment coffee beans undergo one to two days of sun-drying. Although the moisture content of the green beans remains between 30-50%, the parchment is removed first to continue drying, shortening the overall drying process. After approximately two more days of drying, the coffee beans' moisture content can be reduced to 12-13%. This unique Indonesian semi-washed processing method is locally known as Giling Basah, also called wet-hulling.
Special Characteristics
What makes this coffee most special is its aroma! The moment you open the grinder, an astonishingly intense fragrance immediately fills the entire room, compelling you to share this wonderful moment with others. Overall, this is a full-bodied, rich coffee with a dry finish.
The rich mouth texture combined with low-acidity sweetness makes this a perfect choice if you don't prefer acidic coffee - let this coffee amaze your taste buds!
