The name "Kotowa" comes from the indigenous language meaning "mountain"
When it comes to Kotowa Estate located in Boquete Valley,
most coffee enthusiasts' eyes will light up!
One of FrontStreet Coffee's favorite Panamanian estates!
Looking at its excellent competition record, it not only wins awards year after year,
just look at the recent five years
regardless of whether the year was divided into two/three/four groups,
the estate has managed to achieve remarkable success,
winning awards in every category each year,
truly impressive!
The renowned Panamanian Kotowa Coffee
is owned by Ricardo, who manages three very famous Panamanian coffee estates:
"Kotowa Estate"
"Duncan Estate"
"Don K Estate"
Situated in the Baru Volcano region, besides the high-altitude Don K and Duncan estates,
there is its own processing plant and traditionally washed farmland at around 1,350 meters.
In the Volcancillo area of Boquete, nights are cool and frost-free, while days are dry and sunny,
deeply influenced by the microclimate where Pacific and Atlantic air currents meet. The growing season has abundant rainfall and distinct wet and dry seasons. Additionally, volcanic lava flows have created fertile volcanic black soil with excellent drainage, providing unique growing conditions that produce great Panamanian coffee.
Environmental Stewardship
Besides being a consistent winner in coffee competitions,
the estate places great importance on ecological environment,
being awarded the Cleanest Environmental Industry by Panamanian authorities in 2006.
Over 500 trees have been planted in the original forest, with forest protection areas surrounding the estate,
creating biodiversity for flora and fauna. The estate follows a series of strict agricultural production standards,
and properly plans the balance between social and environmental development:
natural water resource and ecosystem protection, wildlife conservation, pest and disease control, soil maintenance, comprehensive waste management, community relationship maintenance, free medical care, and providing fair treatment and good living conditions for farmers and their families.
The Legend of Meticulous Natural Processing
Kotowa's natural processing method requires two to three weeks to complete,
but beneath the black mesh of the drying beds, instead of the typical soil or concrete ground,
there is a thick layer of rice husks.
This facility helps reduce temperature, maintain humidity, and slow down the drying rate!
And this is another secret to why Kotowa Estate coffee tastes so good!
With excellent competition results, winning awards year after year,
just look at the recent five years
winning award batches in every category each year,
truly outstanding!
Unique Regional Terroir and Volcanic Richness
The name "Kotowa Coffee"
means "mountains" in the local indigenous language.
The "Duncan Estate" and "Don K Estate" are located on opposite sides of a mountain ridge, facing the distant Pacific Ocean. Warm, moist winds brush against the steep mountain ridge, creating diverse microclimates here. The volcanic terrain combined with Pacific moist warm winds, plus the low temperatures at high altitudes! Sufficient rainfall and sunshine!
In the western Boquete region, nights are cool and frost-free, days are dry and sunny, deeply influenced by the microclimate where Pacific and Atlantic air currents meet. The growing season has abundant rainfall and distinct wet and dry seasons. Additionally, volcanic lava flows contain rich minerals, the fertile volcanic black soil is nutrient-rich, and drainage is excellent, creating unique terroir conditions.
Forming an excellent organic growing environment!
Therefore, Duncan Estate has strong foundations to develop high-quality organic cultivation!
The coffee produced here has multi-layered richness and charming flavors, thanks to the excellent microclimate
Baru Volcano: Panama's Coffee Crown
Panama's Baru Volcano
possesses unique microclimates and volcanic terrain, being Panama's highest mountain at 3,474 meters (11,398 feet) above sea level. The volcano extends approximately 35 kilometers along the border with Costa Rica. This area has abundant rainfall during the growing season and distinct wet and dry seasons. The black soil is both fertile and well-drained, making the ecological environment rich and the coffee produced particularly captivating.
