Aquiares Estate History and Environment

Coffee cultivation at Aquiares began in the late 19th century, making it one of Costa Rica's largest coffee estates and the first coffee estate to be registered with the Costa Rican Coffee Association.

The estate spans over 917 hectares, with 675 hectares planted with coffee trees and other plants, while the remaining 150 hectares serve as a natural rainforest reserve. Aquiares Estate is located on the volcanic slopes of Turrialba, using volcanic soil as the nutrient source for coffee trees. The estate has numerous natural springs and water sources from 31 rivers for irrigation.

The estate is surrounded by two rivers, Turrialba and Aquiares, with "Aquiares" meaning "the area between two rivers" in the local indigenous language. The Jesus Maria river flows through the estate, and due to topographical differences, forms a waterfall reaching 99 feet in height, making it easy to imagine the paradise-like environment of the estate.

Coffee trees are grown at altitudes between 820~1300 meters.

Aquiares Coffee Estate obtained rainforest protection certification in 2003/2004. They plant coffee trees along contour lines to minimize soil erosion and purify and restore wastewater generated from processing green coffee beans to minimize pollution. The estate preserves very complete native forests, allowing coffee trees growing within to coexist harmoniously with the local natural ecosystem in the most primitive environment possible.

To maintain the quality of green coffee beans, Aquiares Estate only processes green coffee beans at their own processing plant, which also only handles coffee beans grown on their own estate. They conduct green coffee bean processing procedures with a very serious and rigorous attitude.

Coffee Flavor Profile

The coffee beans produced by Aquiares Estate, cultivated in an excellent growing environment, possess very bright fruit acidity, flexible aroma, and smooth, elegant mouthfeel.

The aroma is reminiscent of passion fruit, with a sweet and sour taste profile, displaying a floral-like character in the middle, which transforms into mature chocolate sweetness when cooled.
