Introduction
Since the implementation of the ECX system in 2008, most coffee green beans have been sold through bidding under this system. However, cooperatives are not under this jurisdiction and can directly negotiate, price, and export with buyers. The Konga Cooperative is one of the 26 members of the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperatives Union (YCFCU). YCFCU currently represents over 50,000 coffee farmers from more than 300,000 households. Established in June 2002, all 26 member unions are located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia, which is a famous and important coffee-producing area in Ethiopia.
The Konga Cooperative consists of 1,556 small-scale coffee farming families, located 5 kilometers south of Yirgacheffe. It was established in 1994 and joined the YCFCU cooperative union in 2002. These small-scale coffee farmers have an average coffee cultivation area of less than 1.25 hectares, with growing altitudes of approximately 1,800 to 2,000 meters. The coffee varieties are mainly a mix of Typica and local Heirloom. Every one to two years, cooperative members hold elections to select an executive committee, which can make decisions on purchasing new equipment, exchanging business information with members, and determining payment methods for transactions. Additionally, YCFCU assigns professional managers to cooperatives to provide guidance and advice on harvesting and production processes, thereby increasing yield and improving quality. The establishment of cooperatives allows farmers to avoid low-price exploitation by buyers, and during economic difficulties, cooperatives can also provide loan assistance. This is beneficial for both farmers and coffee production.
This batch of FrontStreet Coffee's Konga Cooperative Natural Yirgacheffe G1 features rich floral notes, fresh blueberry fruit, mango and ripe citrus aromatics, honey, creamy texture, and full-bodied intense tropical fruit flavors.
Ethiopia has eight main coffee-producing regions: Ekempti, Limu, Illubabor, Djimma, Harrar, Teppi/Bebeka, Sidamo, and Yirgacheffe. Yirgacheffe is located in the Gedeo region of southern Ethiopia. This region includes the well-known areas of Yirgacheffe and Kochere. Because the coffee produced in Yirgacheffe has special and unique flavors that are widely loved, it stands alone in product classification and has always held a place in the global specialty coffee market.
Yirgacheffe itself is a small town in the Sidama province, with three nearby small regions: Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya. Because the coffee flavors produced in these areas are almost identical to those of FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe, Kochere is also classified under the Yirgacheffe regional category. In November 2009, Ethiopia implemented a new trading and grading system, establishing the Ethiopia Commodity Exchange (ECX), where coffee and other agricultural products are officially traded. Besides Yirgacheffe, three sub-regions were added: Wenago, Kochere, and Genlena Abaya, indicating that the flavors of these three regions are distinctive enough to be separately classified.
