The Perfect Fusion: Orange and Coffee

As an outstanding representative of the citrus family, oranges are practically a blockbuster in the culinary world, especially during their peak season in autumn and winter when these round fruits become everyone's essential companion for cooling weather.

Similarly, "orange" frequently appears in coffee flavor descriptions. For instance, FrontStreet Coffee's cupping chart includes mandarin orange, sweet orange, rock sugar orange, navel orange, and others. Even before tasting the coffee, these descriptions alone evoke the sensation of sweet and sour juice in one's mind. So how do you combine the two and harmoniously present their aromas in a single cup?

The combination of orange and coffee may seem simple, but if you want to create a truly delicious result, there are actually some subtle considerations in ingredient ratios and preparation methods.

Step 1: Prepare the Orange Juice

The choice of orange juice comes down to two options: freshly squeezed from fruit or store-bought products. If conditions at home allow, FrontStreet Coffee recommends making your own juice, as this allows you to choose your preferred orange varieties and ensures a healthy, additive-free drink. Navel oranges, rock sugar oranges, Ai Yuan jelly oranges, and Chu oranges are all excellent seasonal choices. When juicing, you can choose to retain the pulp for a chewy texture, but if you prefer the pleasure of direct drinking, you should filter them out beforehand.

When it's not convenient to use fresh fruit for juicing, you can buy a bottle of your preferred orange juice from convenience stores. Brands like NFC, Qoo, and Nongfu Spring are all recommended choices from online communities.

Step 2: Prepare the Coffee

Online tutorials range from complex and difficult to extremely simple, with various versions available. But when it comes to the most popular one, many people will immediately think of Luckin's "Orange C Americano." If you want to recreate it, it's best to use higher concentration espresso or moka pot coffee liquid, so the final product won't be overpowered by the orange juice flavor.

Additionally, considering that orange juice has its own fruity sweetness and acidity, you can prioritize coffee beans with a cleaner taste profile. For example, choose medium-roast varieties with flavor descriptions mentioning raisins, apricots, mango, cranberries, toffee, fermentation notes, or liqueur chocolate—words that emphasize both aroma and sweetness. From FrontStreet Coffee's bean selection, options like Sidra, Strawberry Candy, Geisha SOE, Santa Veroni, or the regularly available Sunflower · Warm Sun blend are all excellent choices.

Step 3: Combine Together

To make an Orange C Americano, the ingredients are simply orange juice, coffee liquid, and ice cubes. Aside from the pouring order, the only factor affecting the final product is the ratio between them.

To find the optimal taste, FrontStreet Coffee compared several different ratios during the recreation process and discovered that a 1:3 ratio of coffee liquid to orange juice produces the most suitable concentration. This preserves the rich aroma of the coffee itself while allowing the taste buds to first experience the abundant juice of the orange, creating a very refreshing and pleasant combination.

The operation is also very simple. Using the parameters FrontStreet Coffee tested today, first add 90g of ice cubes to the glass. If you want the coffee to look more photogenic, you can additionally prepare an orange slice to place among the ice. Then pour 120g of freshly squeezed juice (about 3 fresh oranges). Immediately after, grind 19.8g of Warm Sun coffee powder and extract 38g of coffee liquid in 31 seconds, gently pouring it over the surface. The beautifully layered Orange C Iced Americano is complete.

Can Orange C Americano Be Made Hot?

As Guangzhou officially enters winter, FrontStreet Coffee has also prepared a hot version of the Orange C Americano for friends who dislike the cold. Its preparation is actually quite similar to another creative coffee—Quicksand Iced Americano—and uses the same ingredients as the iced version above.

First, prepare a milk pitcher and pour in 80g of ice cubes, 100g of orange juice, and 38g of espresso. Then heat the mixed fruit coffee as you would when steaming milk foam, until all the ice cubes have melted. Friends who prefer a warm taste can continue heating until the milk pitcher feels slightly hot to the touch, then stop the heating process.

Next, find a transparent glass and pour all the orange juice coffee into it, waiting quietly for the quicksand effect.

Compared to the iced version, this hot Orange C Americano has more prominent fruit acidity, a slightly thicker texture, and finishes with a hint of citrus peel flavor.
