Panama Esmeralda Estate Single Origin Bean Differences, Distinctions, and Award History
Geisha is pronounced the same as the Japanese word "geisha," hence it is also called geisha coffee. Because the tree variety is taller than typical coffee trees, it was originally planted in a small area within the estate and used as a windbreak. The estate owner's son, in order to participate in the annual Panama Best Coffee competition, searched through all coffee tree varieties in the estate for testing, which gave Geisha the opportunity to make its debut. Since then, it has also participated in various world coffee competitions, winning a total of eleven championships.
Geisha has rich sweetness, an extremely clean口感, and abundant aromas that extend from berries and citrus to mango, papaya, and peach. A very distinct bergamot-like aftertaste is also one of its typical cupping attributes. To date, Geisha has remained the champion among coffee varieties.
Panama is the most important region on the world coffee map. Every year, auction beans from here fetch high prices of hundreds of dollars.

Panama · Esmeralda Estate Geisha Coffee Beans
The Geisha variety was discovered in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia in 1931 and then sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. In 1936, it was introduced to Uganda and Tanzania, and in 1953, it was introduced to Costa Rica. For a long time, not many people paid attention to Geisha until one day, Don Pachi originally brought it from the small town of GESHA in southwestern Ethiopia to Costa Rica. After that, Geisha entered Panama along the southern route. Panama's Esmeralda Estate separated it from other varieties and it won the national coffee competition championship.
Flavor Description: Oolong tea aroma, peach aroma, honey aroma, fresh and comfortable, bright and balanced, with extremely strong aroma layers. The entire aroma is wrapped together with caramel sweetness. Upon entry, the tongue feels obvious fruit acidity, which is gentle and round in the mouth. The fruity sweetness and aftertaste are strong, like swallowing a mouthful of fresh fruit tea, clear and refreshing. The lower the temperature, the more delicate the acidity. The charm is also quite lasting, making people feel very satisfied!
Introduction to Esmeralda Estate:
Price Peterson. The Peterson family purchased a coffee farm in the Jaramillo region north of Boquete in 1996, later naming it Pequeña Suecia (Little Sweden) to commemorate their homeland. This coffee farm is located on the east side of Volcan Barú, with a cool climate and drifting mountain mist. As described by Mr. Peterson, this newly incorporated area of the Esmeralda farm has excellent altitude and climate (1450-1700m). The coffee beans produced here emit an extremely elegant citrus fragrance after roasting. Interestingly, this old farm has various coffee tree varieties left by previous owners.
2002 was a turning point for Esmeralda Farm, thanks to Mr. Peterson's youngest son - Daniel Peterson. Daniel believed that the coffee produced from both areas of the entire Esmeralda farm (two major coffee growing areas - the original Esmeralda Estate in southwest Boquete and the newly incorporated Jaramillo region in 1996) had always been harvested, mixed, and sold. Although the overall quality evaluation was good, it wasn't necessarily of equal quality and flavor. That extremely elegant citrus fruit aroma and sweetness should come from some excellent coffee within the farm. So he began cupping each growing block individually, and finally discovered in several higher-altitude valley areas of the Jaramillo farm that these tall, sparsely-yielding coffee trees produced coffee with excellent cupping flavor. After several inquiries, it was learned that these varieties that thrive in high-altitude, low-temperature environments were the later famous - GEISHA. In 2004, Esmeralda Estate participated in the Best of Panama-BOP cupping competition with these special coffees. Geisha's unique aroma and rich口感amazed the judges, winning the "Best of Panama" championship title and setting a historical record of USD $21 per pound at that year's auction! This competition brought Esmeralda Estate's Geisha coffee significant attention in the specialty coffee world! Subsequently, it won the BOP crown in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, and 2010.
—Hacienda La Esmeralda is now the coffee estate with the highest award rate globally—
About Hacienda La Esmeralda - The old Esmeralda Estate is located in Palmira, Boquete, built by Swedish immigrant Hans Elliot. Until November 1967, it was purchased by Mr. Rudolph A. Peterson and operated as a dairy farm. In 1973, it was taken over by the elder Rudolph's son - Price Peterson. Price Peterson was born in 1936, grew up in the United States, and obtained a Ph.D. in neurochemistry from U. Penn during his studies. In 1973, he moved to the Esmeralda Estate in Boquete with his wife Susan Duff and their two children, Erik and Rachel. Daniel was the second son born here in 1974. Although the farm was mainly operated as a dairy business under the Peterson family's management, the original old coffee growing areas always existed. After 1987, it gradually transformed into a coffee estate, and in 1994, it established its own coffee processing and washing plant to process the harvested coffee cherries from the farm. In addition to Geisha, other varieties grown in the estate include Typica, Caturra, Catuai, and Bourbon.
Panama
Population: 3,406,000
The definition of Panama coffee is based on how coffee is produced, not on geographical divisions. Previously, when coffee was more widely grown and the regions listed below were smaller and more clustered, the produced coffee beans could be combined as one unit.
BOQUETE
The Boquete region is the most famous Panama growing region. Its mountainous terrain creates many microclimates. The relatively cool weather and frequent fog help slow the maturation of coffee cherries, which some believe is similar to high-altitude climate.
Altitude: 400-1,900m
Harvest: December - March
Varieties: Typica, Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, Geisha, San Ramon
VOLCAN-CANDELA
The Volcan-Candela region produces most of Panama's food and some amazing coffee. The region is named after Baru Volcano and the city of Piedra Candela, and borders Costa Rica.
Altitude: 1,200-1,600m
Harvest: December - March
Varieties: Typica, Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, Geisha, San Ramon
RENACIMIENTO
Renacimiento is a growing region in the Chiriqui province, bordering Costa Rica. The region itself is quite small, so it's not a major specialty coffee producing region in Panama.
Altitude: 1,100-1,500m
Harvest: December - March
Varieties: Typica, Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, Geisha, San Ramon
Introduction:
In November 1967, a Swedish-American, California-born man, who was the president of the Bank of America, Rudolph A. Peterson (1904-2003), purchased this Esmeralda Estate (Hacienda La Esmeralda) from Swedish immigrant Hans Elliot, who had built the estate, as his retirement living place. Hacienda La Esmeralda is a historic estate, a coffee farm located in the small area of Palmira in the Boquete region.
Until November 1967, it was purchased by Rudolph A. Peterson as a retirement living place and dairy farm operation. In 1973, it was taken over by the elder Rudolph's son Price Peterson. Price Peterson was born in 1936, grew up and studied in the United States, obtaining a Ph.D. in neurochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1973, he moved to the Esmeralda Estate in his hometown of Boquete with his wife Susan Duff and their two children, Erik and Rachel. The elder Rudolph's second son, Daniel Peterson, was born here in 1974.
2002 was a turning point for Esmeralda Farm, thanks to Mr. Peterson's youngest son - Daniel Peterson, who believed that the coffee produced from both areas of the entire Esmeralda Farm (two major coffee growing areas - the original Esmeralda Estate in southwest Boquete and the newly incorporated Jaramillo region in 1996) had always been harvested, mixed, and sold. Although the overall quality evaluation was good, it wasn't necessarily of equal quality and flavor. The unique, elegant citrus sweet fruit aroma should come from a certain block within the farm. So he began cupping each growing block individually, and finally discovered in several higher-altitude valley areas of the Jaramillo farm that the cupping flavor was excellent.
Subsequently, it won the BOP crown in subsequent years.
After the Peterson family took over this farm, they purchased and added 60 hectares of the Jaramillo growing area. Some of this area was previously used for dairy farming. After several major renovations of the entire farm, many blocks that were later dedicated to coffee planting slowly began to bear fruit in 2003-2004. In 2002, the Peterson family's son, Daniel, proposed a new idea, believing that not all coffee from the growing regions would have similar good flavors, but that some blocks had more special flavors. So he began cupping all the coffee beans from the entire estate. Finally, in a small valley block at the highest altitude of the estate, he found this special coffee flavor - the coffee beans that sell for the best price at Esmeralda Estate, "Esmeralda Special." The coffee beans from other blocks are also of good quality, but not as amazing as "Esmeralda Special." We understand that "Esmeralda Special" requires many factors combined to produce small-batch, micro-lot top-quality coffee, of course the quantity accounts for a very small percentage of this estate.
Esmeralda Estate (Hacienda La Esmeralda) Introduction
Esmeralda Estate (Hacienda La Esmeralda) is located in the Baru Volcano mountain range in the Boquete region of western Panama. The estate's coffee fruits grow in the fertile volcanic soil and cool climate of the Boquete region.
Panama is near the equator, and the country has a tropical climate. The Boquete region, due to its high altitude and the local terrain and microclimate of Esmeralda Estate, has significant temperature differences. The estate's mornings and evenings are very cold. Half of their carefully tended coffee plantations are located within forest reserves or national park areas. They are firmly committed to implementing sustainable agricultural practices and social responsibility. Due to their care for and special attention to the natural environment, Esmeralda Estate's coffee is Rainforest Alliance Certified (RFA).
The Geisha variety was first discovered at Esmeralda Estate (Hacienda La Esmeralda) in 2003. Esmeralda Estate is currently jointly operated by the third generation, Rachel and Daniel. Daniel is the discoverer who made the Geisha variety popular worldwide. Daniel and his sister Rachel cup and record each batch of harvested coffee cherries, analyzing the flavor differences between different growing areas and batches. One day, Daniel noticed that a batch of coffee had the estate's characteristic plant floral aroma, with a brighter and richer口感. After individual inspection, he finally discovered that the unique aroma and flavor came from the Geisha variety, unveiling the colorful beginning of the Geisha variety, and Esmeralda Estate also stepped onto the stage of becoming a world-class star estate.
In Taiwan and globally, the Geisha variety has become synonymous with top-flavor specialty coffee. Good Geisha beans have obvious "flavor characteristics," with exotic floral aromas like jasmine, peach, and orange. The aroma is distinct and delicate, and it is considered one of the best coffees in the world.
To this day in the specialty coffee world, it is well-known that Geisha originated from Esmeralda Estate. Esmeralda Estate has received countless firsts because of the Geisha variety, as follows:
