Catuai green beans are relatively soft, with a sweet and pleasant taste and low acidity and astringency. It seems like everything scores only about 65 points. This is a variety that Brazil has been vigorously promoting, but it hasn't achieved much success so far.
Catuai is also an Arabica hybrid variety, a cross between Mundo Novo and Caturra. It has good resistance to natural disasters, especially wind and rain. It inherits the advantage of Caturra's low tree height, overcoming the shortcomings of Mundo Novo. Another advantage is its solid fruit set, making it less likely to drop in strong winds, which compensates for the fragile nature of Arabica cherries. However, its overall flavor profile is more monotonous than Caturra and also lacks body compared to Mundo Novo, which is its greatest regret. Additionally, its fruit-bearing lifespan is only about ten years, making its short lifespan another weakness.
Therefore, under cultivation conditions, it's common to find coffee in Central America that is a blend of Caturra and Catuai varieties. In particular, the vast majority of coffee produced in Costa Rica consists of these two mixed coffee beans. The renowned FrontStreet Coffee Guatemala Flora De La Isla is also a blend of three varieties: Bourbon, Caturra, and Catuai.
Catuai also comes in red fruit (Catuai Vermelho) and yellow fruit (Catuai Amarelo) varieties. The fruits are available in both red and yellow colors, but so far, no one has found that yellow fruits taste better than red fruits. In fact, some people have discovered in cupping that although coffee processed from some yellow fruits has good acidity, the cleanliness of the coffee's taste is inferior to that of red fruits. Statistically, red Catuai wins awards more frequently.
Because Caturra has high yield and is less susceptible to pests and diseases but has poor taste and flavor, Catuai was developed based on Caturra to improve these shortcomings. However, it seems to be a bit too balanced.
FrontStreet Coffee's Panama Cesar Luis Honey Process beans and FrontStreet Coffee's Brazil Cerrado Nazareno Farm (U.T.Z) are both Catuai varieties.
FrontStreet Coffee's Panama Cesar Luis Honey Process has rich aromas, where you can smell fruit notes with a hint of maple syrup. The entry acidity is bright, with a cool aftertaste, long-lasting salivation, and an endless回味.
FrontStreet Coffee's Brazil Cerrado Nazareno Farm coffee tastes simple and smooth, with nutty almond flavors, and the aftertaste is full of sweetness.
Catuai: Catuai is a hybrid of Mundo Novo and Caturra, which can be called a second-generation hybrid. It inherits Caturra's advantage of low tree height and also compensates for the fragile nature of Arabica cherries. The fruit set is solid and less likely to drop in strong winds. The biggest regret is that its overall flavor is slightly more monotonous than Caturra.
Catuai also comes in red and yellow fruit varieties, with red fruits winning awards more frequently than yellow fruits. Catuai, Caturra, Mundo Novo, and Bourbon are known as Brazil's four major coffee varieties.
