Brazilian Coffee Regions
Brazil's terrain is generally flat, with most coffee farms situated at altitudes between 600-1000 meters. The monotonous, flat landscape lacks microclimates, and the common practice of non-shade cultivation has led to Brazil's unique soft bean characteristics—low acidity, prominent nutty flavors, chocolatey sweetness, and good body, though sometimes with slight woody and earthy notes, while floral and citrus aromas are less pronounced.
However, the Cerrado plateau in western Minas and South Minas regions feature elevations mostly above 1100 meters, with diverse topography, distinct wet and dry seasons, significant day-night temperature variations, and abundant microclimates. These conditions are ideal for cultivating elegant Bourbon and Yellow Bourbon varieties, naturally making these areas Brazil's main premium coffee producing regions.
Additionally, Mogiana in northeastern São Paulo province also focuses primarily on shade-grown Bourbon, ranking alongside Cerrado and South Minas as Brazil's three major premium coffee regions.
