Yirgacheffe Region Overview

Yirgacheffe itself is a small town with a population of about 20,000 people. The three neighboring small regions of Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya produce coffee with flavors almost identical to Yirgacheffe, so they are also classified under the Yirgacheffe regional category. Yirgacheffe shares similarities with the nearby Sidamo region in both culture and geographical environment, but Yirgacheffe seems to be especially favored with unique advantageous conditions. Top-quality Yirgacheffe coffee features floral aromas, bright citrus acidity, lemon-toned notes, and a silky smooth mouthfeel.

Coffee Origin

This coffee comes from a single farm in Ethiopia, processed by the Worka Cooperative. The Alemayehu Alako farm is a member of the Worka Cooperative.

Worka Cooperative facility

The Worka Cooperative is located in the southern part of the Gedeb district and was established in 2005. In the same year, it joined the famous Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU). The Worka Cooperative is renowned for producing high-quality natural processed Yirgacheffe coffee and has approximately 300 coffee farmers under its umbrella. YCFCU was established in 2002 and includes 26 other cooperatives, serving over 45,000 coffee farmers.

Compared to the traditionally natural processed Harar region, natural processed Yirgacheffe is less common. As the region where Ethiopia's first washed processing station was established, Yirgacheffe is more familiar to coffee enthusiasts for its washed coffee known for elegant lemon and citrus characteristics.

Washed coffee processing

Washed processed coffee flavors are less likely to have wild characteristics, featuring pure and refreshing qualities suitable for light roast levels. This washed Ethiopian coffee can achieve the highest G1 grade, indicating very few defects.

Flavor Profile

Distinct floral aromas, with intense citrus notes in both dry and wet aromas. The front palate features lemon, kumquat, white grape juice, and other diverse flavors. The middle to back palate presents rich citrus sweetness with a soda-like rich sweetness—distinctive, prominent, and exceptionally rare.
