Yirgacheffe Region Overview

Yirgacheffe itself is a small town with approximately 20,000 inhabitants. The three neighboring small regions—Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya—are also classified under the Yirgacheffe regional category because their coffee flavors are virtually identical to those of Yirgacheffe. While Yirgacheffe shares similar culture and geographical environment with the nearby Sidamo region, it seems to be particularly favored with exceptional natural conditions. Top-quality Yirgacheffe coffee features floral notes, bright citrus fruit acidity, lemon-toned aromas, and a silky smooth mouthfeel.

Introduction

This coffee comes from a single farm in Ethiopia, processed by the Worka Cooperative. The Alemayehu Alako farm is a member of the Worka Cooperative.

The Worka Cooperative is located in the southern part of Gedeb district, established in 2005, and joined the renowned Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU) in the same year. It is known for producing high-quality natural-processed Yirgacheffe coffee. The Worka Cooperative has approximately 300 coffee farmers as members. YCFCU was established in 2002 and includes 26 other cooperatives, serving over 45,000 coffee farmers.

Compared to the traditional natural-processed Harar region, natural-processed Yirgacheffe is not as common. As the region where Ethiopia's first washing station was established, Yirgacheffe is more familiar to coffee enthusiasts for its washed coffee, renowned for elegant lemon and citrus characteristics.

Washed-processed coffee flavors are less likely to have wild characteristics, possessing pure and refreshing qualities that are suitable for light roast degrees. This washed Ethiopian coffee can achieve the highest G1 grade, indicating it is already a grade with very few defects.
