The Sidamo Region

Sidamo's coffee flavors are incredibly diverse, as different soil compositions, regional microclimates, and countless native coffee varieties create significant differences and characteristics in coffee produced by each town and area. The Sidamo region is located in southern Ethiopia, with agriculture being the main industry. Coffee growing areas are situated around the Great Rift Valley.

Shakisso Estate Introduction

Shakisso is located in the Guji zone of Sidamo, in the southern part of the Oromia region, bordering Sidama and Gedeo. This area has many mine pits that were originally used for gold mining, so there are numerous pits in the coffee growing areas, making it dangerous to walk between coffee plantations. Shakisso is a unique region within Guji/Sidamo, being a remote area far from most coffee-producing locations even within Sidamo. Gold mining is another famous local product. Factors such as miners, land, and ethnic tensions also made the region unstable in 2006. Therefore, the biggest challenge this region currently faces is the need for manpower to maintain the growing areas and harvest coffee.

Local small farmers in this area began growing organic coffee in 2001 and work closely with medium-sized coffee producers who are familiar with how to grow forest coffee in highlands. This is one of the micro-regions with very distinctive characteristics within the Sidamo region. Coffee from this area is quite unique and has repeatedly garnered market attention. Ninety Plus's legendary bean (nekisse) originally means "Nectar from Shakisso," with both its origin and name derived from Shakisso.
