Sun-Dried Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Wenago Cooperative Premium Coffee Beans: Origin, Development, History, and Culture

The Wenago Cooperative belongs to the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU), established in 2005 as one of 22 primary cooperatives. The Wenago Cooperative is located in the Gedeb area of the Gedeo administrative zone, a remote region within Yirgacheffe, 75 kilometers from the local coffee collection center of Dilla town. The access roads are in poor condition, with a 20-kilometer dirt road connecting from the cooperative to the main paved highway. The altitude is very high, at around 1800-1900 meters. Because no chemical fertilizers or pesticides were used during coffee cultivation, the Wenago smallholder farmers have also obtained Skal organic coffee certification recognized by the European Union. Just as Kochere is famous for washed processing, Wenago is particularly outstanding for natural processing. However, both Wenago and Kochere have green beans processed by different methods. In recent years, natural processing has become increasingly refined, significantly improving the traditional extensive methods used for hundreds of years, with greater attention to harvesting mature cherries and caring for the drying process, allowing the beans to retain the sweetness of the fruit pulp, subtle charming fermented wine flavors, creating tastes not found in washed processing.
Flavor Profile
The aroma features rich and distinct fresh strawberry and blueberry fruit notes, along with raisin fragrance, pineapple, mango, complex fruits, citrus-berry notes, syrupy sweetness, floral aromas, juicy May peaches, and other very delicate berry scents. The finish carries apricot fruit notes and sweet, rich tropical fruit flavors.

Yirgacheffe itself is a small town with approximately 20,000 people. The three adjacent small producing regions—Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya—are classified under the Yirgacheffe regional category because the coffee flavors they produce are virtually identical to those from Yirgacheffe. Both culturally and geographically, Yirgacheffe is similar to the nearby Sidamo, but Yirgacheffe seems to be more favored with exceptionally advantageous conditions. Top-quality Yirgacheffe coffee features floral aromas, bright citrus fruit acidity, lemon-toned notes, and a silky smooth mouthfeel.
