Regional Background
Yirgacheffe itself is a small town with approximately 20,000 inhabitants. The three neighboring small regions—Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya—produce coffee with flavors nearly identical to Yirgacheffe, so they are also classified within the Yirgacheffe regional category. While Yirgacheffe shares similar cultural and geographical environments with neighboring Sidamo, it appears to be especially favored with exceptionally advantageous conditions. Top-quality Yirgacheffe coffee features floral notes, bright citrus acidity, lemon-like characteristics, and a silky smooth mouthfeel.
Introduction
This coffee originates from a single farm in Ethiopia and is processed by the Wenago Cooperative.
The cooperative is located in the southern part of the Gedeb district and was established in 2005, joining the renowned Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU) the same year. It is known for producing high-quality natural processed Yirgacheffe coffee. The Wenago Cooperative includes approximately 300 coffee farmers. The YCFCU was established in 2002 and includes 26 other cooperatives, serving over 45,000 coffee farmers.
The Wenago Cooperative is part of the YCFCU cooperative union organization and was established in 2005 as one of 22 primary cooperatives. The Wenago Cooperative is located in the Gedeb area within the Gedeo administrative zone,属于 a remote region within Yirgacheffe, situated 75 kilometers from the local coffee collection center of Dilla town. The road connections are poor, with a 20-kilometer dirt road from the cooperative to the main paved highway. The altitude is very high, around 1800-1900 meters. Because no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used during coffee cultivation, the Wenago smallholder farmers have obtained Skal organic coffee certification recognized by the European Union. Just as Kochere is famous for washed processing, Wenago is particularly outstanding for natural processing. However, both Wenago and Kochere offer green beans with different processing methods. In recent years, natural processing has become increasingly refined, significantly improving upon the traditional more rudimentary methods practiced for hundreds of years. Greater attention is now paid to harvesting ripe cherries and caring for the drying process, allowing the beans to retain the sweetness of the fruit pulp and subtle, charming fermented wine-like flavors, creating characteristics that washed processing cannot achieve.
