Introduction to Sun-Dried Ethiopia Yirgacheffe Wenago Cooperative Specialty Coffee Bean Variety, Cultivation, and Market Price
Introduction
This coffee comes from a single farm in Ethiopia, processed by the Wenago Cooperative.
The cooperative is located in the southern part of Gedeb district and was established in 2005, joining the renowned Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU) in the same year. It is known for producing high-quality natural processed Yirgacheffe coffee. The Wenago Cooperative has approximately 300 coffee farmers. YCFCU was established in 2002 and includes 26 other cooperative members, serving over 45,000 coffee farmers.
The Wenago Cooperative is part of the YCFCU cooperative union organization and was established in 2005 as one of 22 primary cooperatives. The Wenago Cooperative is located in the Gedeb area within the Gedeo administrative zone, a remote region within Yirgacheffe, 75 kilometers away from the local coffee collection center of Dilla town. The external road conditions are poor, with a 20-kilometer dirt road from the cooperative to the main paved highway. The altitude is very high, around 1800-1900 meters. Because no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used during coffee cultivation, the Wenago small farmers have obtained Skal organic coffee certification recognized by the European Union. Just as Kochere is famous for washed processing, Wenago is particularly outstanding in natural processing. However, both Wenago and Kochere have green beans processed by different methods. In recent years, natural processing has become increasingly refined, significantly improving upon the relatively rough traditional model of hundreds of years. Greater attention is paid to harvesting mature cherries and caring for the natural drying process, allowing the beans to retain the sweetness of the fruit pulp, with a charming light fermented wine flavor that creates flavors not found in washed processing.
Flavor Profile
The aroma features rich and distinct fresh strawberry and blueberry fruit notes, with raisin fragrance, pineapple, mango, complex fruits, citrus and berry tones, syrup, floral notes, juicy May peaches, and other very fresh berry aromas, followed by dried apricot and sweet, rich tropical fruit flavors in the aftertaste.

Yirgacheffe itself is a small town with a population of about 20,000. The three neighboring small producing regions of Wenago, Kochere, and Gelena Abaya produce coffee with flavors almost identical to Yirgacheffe, so they are also classified under the Yirgacheffe regional classification. Yirgacheffe is similar to neighboring Sidamo in both culture and geographical environment, but Yirgacheffe seems to be more favored with uniquely advantageous conditions. Top-quality Yirgacheffe coffee features floral notes, bright citrus fruit acidity, lemon-toned aromas, and a silky smooth mouthfeel.
