Boquete is a town in Chiriqui Province, situated near the border between Panama and Costa Rica, close to the famous Baru Volcano. With its stunning scenery, fertile and rich soil, and climate and terrain that are exceptionally suitable for producing high-quality coffee.
Within the Boquete region, there are many outstanding estates. Besides the famous Hacienda La Esmeralda, there are also renowned estates like Elida Estate and Akaba Estate, all producing excellent specialty coffee. This is not only due to Panama's superior ecological conditions in the Boquete area and the fertile volcanic ash soil of the Baru volcano region. Another important factor is the unique microclimate in Panama's Boquete highlands, which is an exclusive resource for the region's specialty coffee. The east-to-west environmental pattern in Panama causes cold air currents to gather above 6,500 feet through the central mountains, creating various microclimates in the Boquete area. This makes the temperature and rainfall perfect for plant growth, so coffee trees planted here grow exceptionally well.
In such a uniquely favorable growing environment like Boquete, there naturally isn't just one coffee king like Esmeralda's Geisha with its extraordinary flavor, quality, and value. However, drinking Geisha daily is still quite luxurious, and even if there's no financial pressure, eating delicacies like shark fin and bear paw every day isn't quite right either. Those familiar with single-origin coffee should know that Panama coffee is famous in the coffee world for the Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda. Introducing the Butterfly Coffee
So in the land of Boquete, there is a coffee bean with exceptional value for money. And it has a very beautiful name - Butterfly. It possesses 40% of the excellent Geisha heritage, composed of three varieties: Geisha, Caturra, and Catuai. It is grown in the Baru volcano region of Boquete, at an altitude of 1,600 meters in the volcanic area. The processing plant uses fine washed processing. Panama's special local microclimate leads to abundant rainfall in this region, with significant day-night temperature differences. Combined with the unique volcanic rock soil of the volcanic region, as well as meticulous harvesting and fine processing, this coffee performs outstandingly in body, acidity, and floral notes.
What's even more surprising is that on top of its excellent quality, a very approachable price makes this coffee bean's value for money explode. The special characteristic of this coffee bean is that it's composed of three varieties, with 40% being Geisha, giving this coffee a very distinct Geisha flavor. According to research, due to the estate's historical reasons, in pursuit of higher yields during earlier times, Geisha varieties were mixed and planted together with Caturra and Catuai varieties. For easier harvesting, coffee farmers didn't reclassify them but directly processed the three varieties together. Later, after Geisha became famous and prices soared, the processing plant began to apply fine washed processing to such coffee beans.
Washed Processing Method
There are many washed processing methods today, but generally, after coffee cherries are harvested, floating beans are skimmed off, then the pulp is removed, and the coffee beans are soaked in fermentation tanks. Enzymes in the water soften the mucilage attached to the coffee bean's inner parchment, while natural yeast breaks down the sugars in the mucilage. This process is called fermentation. After fermentation is complete, the coffee beans are moved to drying patios to dry. During the drying process, the beans need constant turning to ensure even drying. Finally, they are stored in warehouses with parchment, and only after green bean buyers place orders are they hulled and bagged. Coffee processed this way has a clean taste, emphasizing bright, lively fruit acidity, as well as clear fruit flavors and floral notes.
