Local production is not extensive, with approximately 85% of the total coffee production coming from smallholder garden cultivation systems. Due to different coffee varieties from Indonesia, higher altitudes than Sumatra, and the use of washed processing, PNG coffee's regional characteristics differ markedly from Indonesia's stuffy and heavy flavors, instead featuring bright acidity, sweet-sour balance, and floral and fruity aromas, similar to South American flavor profiles.

Kimel Estate: A Cooperative Masterpiece
Large plantations typically have their own washing stations, while smaller individual coffee farmers can better control output quality and flavor expression. Located in Papua New Guinea's western highlands in the Waghi Valley near the Kimel River Valley, Kimel Estate, like many large plantations, has its own dedicated washing station. In fact, this is an estate jointly owned by numerous independent small coffee farmers from the surrounding Opais people, making it essentially a private cooperative. Due to excellent growing conditions and the processing plant's stable quality control processes, the produced coffee exhibits vibrant brightness while preserving a considerable degree of Papua New Guinea coffee's unique flavor characteristics.
Varietal Diversity and Risk Management
Another special feature lies in Kimel's diverse coffee varieties—so numerous they cannot be counted on one hand: Typica, Arusha, Blue Mountain, Mundo Novo, Catimor, Caturra, and even more. In fact, just as one doesn't put all eggs in one basket, most farmers plant different varieties to avoid risks of poor growth or suboptimal production from specific varieties, which also creates interesting expressions in their coffee flavor profiles.

This Kimel Estate peaberry offers subtle spiced notes on the palate, followed by sweet and refreshing flavors of nuts and sugarcane, with a creamy, smooth mouthfeel. The peaberry's texture is more substantial, presenting overall balance and smoothness. The flavor is rich, the aroma is pleasant, with no herbal or earthy notes. Its texture is as rich and mellow as a Van Gogh painting.

Legend has it that in 1545, explorer Ortiz Retez reached the island and noticed that most islanders had curly hair, thus calling it "the island of curly-haired people," hence the name that has persisted. Papua New Guinea is located east of Indonesia, featuring a typical island climate between the equator and 10° south latitude. With tropical rainforest, volcanic soil, and highland terrain at altitudes ranging from 1,200-2,500 meters, it is truly a paradise for coffee cultivation.
