The Legend of Geisha Coffee

The pronunciation of "Geisha" is the same as the Japanese word for geisha, hence it is also known as Geisha coffee. Because the tree variety is taller than typical coffee trees, it was originally planted in a small area within the estate and used as a windbreak. The owner's son, seeking to participate in the annual Panama's Best Coffee competition, searched through all coffee tree varieties in the estate for testing, giving Geisha its opportunity to shine. Since then, it has participated in various world coffee competitions, winning a total of eleven championships.

The Geisha variety was discovered in the Geisha forest of Ethiopia in 1931 and then sent to the Coffee Research Institute in Kenya. In 1936, it was introduced to Uganda and Tanzania, and in 1953, Costa Rica imported it. For a long time, not many people paid attention to Geisha until one day, Don Pachi initially brought it from the small town of GESHA in southwestern Ethiopia to Costa Rica. Afterward, Geisha entered Panama along the southern route, where Panama's Esmeralda Estate separated it from other varieties and it went on to win the National Coffee Competition Championship.

Geisha possesses full-bodied sweetness, an extremely clean mouthfeel, and rich aromas that extend from berries and citrus to mango, papaya, and peach notes. A very distinct bergamot-like aftertaste is also one of its typical cupping characteristics. To date, Geisha remains the champion among coffee varieties.

Panama: A Premier Coffee Origin

Panama is one of the most important regions on the world coffee map. Coffee beans from its annual auctions often fetch high prices of hundreds of dollars.

Mamacata Estate: A Modern Approach to Coffee Cultivation

Compared to other ancient and historic estates, Mamacata Estate, established in 1997, is relatively young. While it lacks a long historical heritage, estate owner José David Garrido Pérez himself holds Q Grader certification. This allows Mamacata to focus more intensely on coffee cultivation techniques to produce unique coffee beans.

The estate is situated in the Chiriquí district of Boquete, at an altitude of 1500-1700 meters, with an average annual temperature between 13-26°C and annual rainfall of approximately 4000mm. Combined with nutrient-rich volcanic ash soil, this creates an environment highly suitable for coffee cultivation. Such natural microclimate enhances the richness of compounds in the coffee beans. Unlike traditional coffee estates, Mamacata uses GPS coordinates to define its micro-lot regions.

Through understanding and application of technological information, growers obtain data on each coffee tree's variety, soil composition, health status, and production conditions. This information enables them to effectively respond to any variables that might adversely affect coffee bean production and further helps Mamacata become one of the consistent winners in the Best of Panama competition.
