The Heritage of Panama Coffee
Panama coffee originated in 1780 when European immigrants introduced the first Typica varieties. Located in Central America, the region enjoys natural advantages of sunshine, fertile land, and high mountains, combined with an ample labor force, making it an exceptional area for cultivating high-quality specialty coffee—a true paradise for coffee cultivation. Particularly, Geisha variety coffee from Panama has sparked the global trend of specialty coffee appreciation, successfully attracting worldwide market interest in Panamanian coffee.
The Boquete region is Panama's oldest and most renowned coffee-producing area, situated on the eastern side of Baru Volcano at an average elevation of 1000-2000 meters. The "Volcan Baru National Park" serves as an ecological conservation area with extremely rich biodiversity, featuring multiple microclimates. Perpetually shrouded in mist with abundant rainfall, these conditions create excellent cultivation environments, giving Boquete coffee its unique aroma and making it the region with the highest production and finest quality in Panama. During each harvest season, coffee farmers employ the refined washed method and sun-drying process, ensuring full, flavorful green coffee beans.
The Terroir of Baru Volcano
Baru Volcano is not only Panama's highest mountain range—early volcanic activity and eruptions deposited vast amounts of fertile soil. This soil is rich in nutrients, with volcanic ash particularly abundant in phosphorus and sulfur. Mixed with clay and combined with unique climate patterns, this creates an ideal environment for growing premium coffee. The dense forests and numerous species contribute to overall biodiversity.
Here, approximately 50 coffee farmers form a small cooperative, all using traditional Boquete methods to produce coffee—allowing it to grow in a near-natural environment. Although yields are not high, this approach maintains a rich ecological environment and can preserve or even improve soil quality. Natural cultivation methods not only benefit the environment but also allow coffee cherries to grow slowly, resulting in higher-quality, exceptionally flavorful coffee beans. Farmers manually harvest complete coffee cherries and transport them to the nearby Cafe de Eleta S.A. for processing. The processing facility is located about 4 kilometers from the farms and includes a modern laboratory for cupping quality control and manual sorting.
