Panama Coffee Origins

Panama is a Central American country, bordering Costa Rica to the west and Colombia to the east. Those familiar with single-origin coffee should know that Panama coffee is renowned in the coffee world for Esmeralda Estate's Geisha variety. It can be said to be a country that pursues excellence in coffee and produces high-quality coffee.

Panama coffee is famous for Esmeralda Estate's Geisha, and the region where Esmeralda Estate is located is also quite well-known; it's the Boquete region located in Chiriqui Province. Boquete is a town in Chiriqui Province, situated near the border between Panama and Costa Rica, close to the famous Baru Volcano. With beautiful scenery, fertile and rich soil, the climate and soil are extremely suitable for producing high-quality coffee.

Within the Boquete region, there are many excellent estates. Besides the famous Esmeralda Estate, there are also renowned estates like Elida Estate and Akaba Estate, all producing high-quality specialty coffee. This not only benefits from the superior ecological conditions of Panama's Boquete region and the fertile volcanic ash soil of the Baru Volcano area. There is also an important factor: the microclimate found in the highlands of Boquete is a unique resource for specialty coffee in this region; this is due to Panama's east-to-west environment that allows cold air currents to gather above 6,500 feet through the central mountain range, thus creating multiple microclimates in the Boquete area, making its temperature and rainfall extremely suitable for plant growth. Therefore, coffee trees planted here grow exceptionally well.

The Flora Butterfly Story

However, in such a favorable growing environment as Boquete, there naturally exists more than just Esmeralda's Geisha as a coffee king with extraordinary flavor, quality, and value; but drinking Geisha daily would still be quite luxurious, and even if there's no financial pressure, eating delicacies like shark's fin and bear's paw every day wouldn't be appropriate either. The same applies to coffee - broader exploration allows one to better enjoy the pleasure of tasting coffee.

Then, in the land of Boquete, there exists a coffee bean with exceptionally high value for money. And it has a very beautiful name - Flora Butterfly. She possesses 40% of the excellent Geisha bloodline, composed of three varieties: Geisha, Caturra, and Catuai, grown in the Baru Volcano region of Boquete, at an altitude of 1,600 meters in the volcanic area. The processing plant uses meticulous washed processing. Panama's special local microclimate leads to abundant rainfall in this region, coupled with significant day-night temperature differences. Combined with the unique volcanic rock soil of the volcanic region, as well as careful harvesting and meticulous processing, this coffee performs outstandingly in body, acidity, and floral aromas.

What's even more surprising is that, based on its excellent quality, a very approachable price makes this coffee bean's value for money exceptional. The special characteristic of this coffee bean lies in its composition of three varieties, with 40% Geisha variety, giving this coffee very obvious Geisha flavors. According to research data, due to the estate's historical reasons, when pursuing yield in the past, early Geisha varieties were mixed and planted with Caturra and Catuai variety coffee trees. To facilitate harvesting, coffee farmers did not reclassify them but directly processed the three varieties together. Later, after Geisha became famous overnight and prices soared, the processing plant began to implement refined washed processing for such coffee beans.

Washed Processing Method

There are many washed processing methods today, but generally, after coffee cherries are harvested, floating beans are removed, then the pulp is removed, and the coffee beans are soaked in fermentation tanks. Enzymes in the water soften the mucilage attached to the parchment of the coffee beans, while natural yeasts break down the sugars in the mucilage - this process is called fermentation. After fermentation is complete, the coffee beans are moved to drying patios to dry. During the drying process, the coffee beans need to be constantly turned to ensure even drying. Finally, they are stored in warehouses with parchment, and after green bean merchants place orders, hulling and bagging are performed. Coffee processed this way has a clean mouthfeel, emphasizing bright and lively fruit acidity, as well as clear fruit flavors and floral aromas.
