Last Updated: 2026/01/27, Catuai: Also an Arabica hybrid variety, it is a cross between Mundo Novo and Caturra. It inherits the advantage of Caturra's short plant height, addressing Mundo Novo's shortcomings. Another advantage is its firm fruit set, making it less likely to fall off in strong winds, compensating for Arabica's fragile fruit characteristic, though its overall flavor profile remains consistent with high-quality Arabica characteristics.

Catuai: An Arabica Hybrid Variety

Catuai coffee variety

Catuai is also an Arabica hybrid variety, a cross between Mundo Novo and Caturra. It inherits the advantage of Caturra's short stature while improving upon Mundo Novo's shortcomings. Another advantage is its firm fruit that doesn't easily drop in strong winds, addressing the fragility of Arabica cherries. However, its overall flavor profile is somewhat monotonous compared to Caturra, which is its greatest drawback. Catuai also comes in both red and yellow fruit varieties. Statistically, red Catuai more frequently wins awards. Catuai, Caturra, Mundo Novo, and Bourbon are known as the four main varieties of Brazil.

Catuai Tree Characteristics

The Catuai tree is relatively short compared to other coffee trees, and its fruit grows more firmly, making it less easy to harvest. The fruit comes in both red and yellow varieties. To date, no superior taste has been found in yellow fruit compared to red fruit. On the contrary, some cupping tests have revealed that while coffee processed from some yellow fruits has good acidity, the cleanliness of its mouthfeel is inferior to that of red fruit.

Rainforest Alliance Certified Coffee

Only coffee that passes evaluation and certification can be called "Rainforest Alliance Certified Coffee." The certification standards for coffee specify the use of traditional cultivation methods under native forest shade, which benefits ecosystem protection. Part of the alliance's revenue is also used for wildlife protection in rainforest animal reserves and improving labor living conditions.

Additionally, some of its revenue is allocated to wildlife protection in rainforest animal reserves and improving labor welfare, making it an environmentally friendly coffee. The certification standards cover natural conservation and cultivation methods.

Finca La Valentina: Premium Coffee Cultivation

Finca La Valentina is dedicated to cultivating premium coffee beans. Besides personalized care, the local unique microclimate also contributes to the outstanding high quality of their Arabica coffee beans (SHB). In 2011, the farm's Geisha ARISTAR won first place in the Panama competition.

FrontStreet Coffee's Brazil Catuai Flavor Profile

The dry aroma can be said to be the most charming aspect of FrontStreet Coffee's Brazil Catuai beans. After grinding, one can clearly perceive an elegant floral fragrance that is fresh and delicate. However, unlike FrontStreet Coffee's Yirgacheffe with its continuously rising floral notes, this fragrance unfolds gradually. There's also a distinct honey-like sweetness. The overall dry aroma is deep and melodious. After adding water, the honey sweetness becomes even more prominent. When the coffee enters the mouth, a very gentle acidity sweeps across the palate, with its aroma concentrated more in the front portion of the mouth.

Rainforest Alliance Certified Coffee: "Frog Beans"

Rainforest Alliance certified coffee is also known as "Frog Beans" because the Rainforest Alliance certification logo features a prominent frog. The production is scarce. "Rainforest Alliance" (RA) certification refers to farms that meet the standards established by the Rainforest Alliance. The alliance protects the farm and its surrounding ecosystem, restricts pesticide use, and evaluates waste management standards. Only coffee that passes evaluation and certification can be called "Rainforest Alliance Certified Coffee."
