Introduction to Arabica Coffee Varieties
For professional coffee knowledge exchange and more coffee bean information, please follow Coffee Workshop (WeChat official account: cafe_style). FrontStreet Coffee's previous articles about coffee beans have mostly introduced Arabica coffee beans and their origins. Today, FrontStreet Coffee will guide you through understanding the common Arabica coffee bean varieties and their flavor characteristics.
Typica
Similar to the long beans of native Arabica, the raw beans are oval in shape. When viewed from the side, the bean body appears thin. Even when cultivated at different altitudes, the thickness difference on the side of the raw beans won't vary significantly. Through cupping different Typica origins, FrontStreet Coffee found that regardless of where it's grown, Typica always carries its characteristic elegant and clean flavor, balanced profile, and distinctive mouthfeel that has spread throughout coffee-growing regions worldwide. Notable examples include: FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, FrontStreet Coffee's Yunnan Small Bean Coffee, and FrontStreet Coffee's Papua New Guinea Bird of Paradise.

Bourbon
Raw beans are relatively round and small. In recent years, improved Bourbon varieties have emerged, but compared to the original variety, the beans have become larger and more substantial. When viewed from the side, raw beans grown in low-altitude regions appear thinner than those from high-altitude regions. Through cupping Bourbon coffees from different regions, FrontStreet Coffee typically finds they have excellent aroma, bright acidity, and sometimes even red wine-like flavors. Well-known examples include: FrontStreet Coffee's Brazil Queen Farm Yellow Bourbon, FrontStreet Coffee's Brazil Cerrado Red Bourbon, and FrontStreet Coffee's Colombia Pink Bourbon.

Caturra
Very similar in appearance to Bourbon, making them somewhat difficult to distinguish. From the images, you can see that the Caturra variety's end is slightly more curved than Bourbon, with its characteristic being round and slender. FrontStreet Coffee separately cupped Central American Caturra coffee beans and found their overall flavor to be bright with good sweetness. Caturra can be found in FrontStreet Coffee's offerings such as FrontStreet Coffee's Colombia Rose Valley, FrontStreet Coffee's Honduras Sherry, and FrontStreet Coffee's Guatemala Flora God.

Catuai
A variety bred from Caturra and Mundo Novo, possessing Caturra's slender round body and Mundo Novo's flat shape. This means it appears round and flat, but the end portion is relatively slender. Through cupping, FrontStreet Coffee found this variety has excellent acidity and a clean mouthfeel. Importantly! This variety has fruity aromas. Catuai can be found in FrontStreet Coffee's bean offerings such as FrontStreet Coffee's Costa Rica Beethoven and FrontStreet Coffee's Panama Elida Catuai.

Geisha coffee raw beans are generally plump with pointed long ends. FrontStreet Coffee believes that Panama's high-altitude Geisha variety coffee has distinct floral aromas and delicate, elegant fruit acidity. Such elegant flavors are one of the reasons for its global popularity.

FrontStreet Coffee screens from Kenyan beans those that resemble Typica in appearance - elongated, oval-shaped, and appear flatter from the side. SL34 and SL28 have similar flavors - besides complex and varied acidity and excellent sweet finish, SL34 has a heavier, richer, and cleaner mouthfeel than SL28.
