As a globally renowned chain coffee shop, Starbucks aims to maintain consistent coffee quality across all its stores worldwide. Their coffee preparation methods are typically not overly complex, and they tend to prefer fully automated machines for making coffee products. Starbucks offers many delicious coffees, and here we recommend their cold brew coffee extracted through cold water immersion!
Starbucks' current coffee product preparation is generally divided into four categories: made using fully automatic espresso machines, made using coffee drip machines, extracted through cold brew immersion, and pour-over drip coffee using filter cones and filter paper.
Espresso Machine Preparation
Espresso is an extremely concentrated coffee product that requires coffee beans to be ground into very fine coffee powder, then through the pressurization function of coffee, allows hot water at about 94 degrees Celsius to quickly pass through the coffee powder layer, extracting a small amount of highly concentrated coffee liquid.
Because espresso typically exhibits rich roasted nut and caramel flavors, and due to its high concentration, the intense taste is not friendly to first-time coffee drinkers, so Starbucks has introduced many espresso-based coffee products diluted with different ingredients.
Among them, adding an appropriate amount of water creates Americano coffee, adding an appropriate amount of milk creates latte coffee, and adding an appropriate amount of milk and dense milk foam creates cappuccino coffee.
Coffee Drip Machine Preparation
Unlike espresso machines, coffee drip machines do not have pressurization functions. Staff only need to grind coffee beans to the appropriate coarseness, then pour them into the specified container with filter paper. After pressing the extraction button, the machine will inject hot water without pressure, and the coffee liquid will also pass through the filter paper and drip into the designated container.
The coffee made by this machine is called Coffee of the Day/Coffee of the Week/Fresh Drip Coffee. However, this product has been discontinued in China, while it is still relatively common in foreign Starbucks stores.
Cold Water Immersion Extracted Coffee
Usually, coffee is extracted using hot water, but high temperatures can easily cause coffee to release too many bitter substances, so people thought of using cold water to soak coffee, then placing it in the refrigerator for cold extraction, also known as cold brew coffee.
The advantage of cold extraction is that low temperatures do not easily release the bitter substances in coffee, while also being able to extract the sweet and sour substances in coffee. However, the extraction time needs to be relatively long, usually requiring 12-18 hours of soaking, but the resulting coffee taste will be very full and clean, and the caffeine content will be higher, providing excellent stimulation~
Pour-over Drip Coffee
A method that requires placing filter paper in a filter cone, then pouring hot water through a specialized gooseneck kettle, causing the coffee powder on the filter paper to tumble, allowing the soluble flavor substances to come into contact with water and drip out as clean coffee liquid after passing through the filter paper. The biggest characteristic of pour-over coffee is its cleanliness, balance, and appropriate concentration. However, because it requires fully manual operation, the overall consistency is not as stable as espresso and cold brew coffee, but it's still worth trying~
