Cuban Coffee: The Premier Brands

Cuba has three major coffee brands, with Cubita being the most representative.

Cubita coffee's original beans are selected from pollution-free Crystal Mountain coffee beans grown in Cuba's high-altitude regions. All coffee beans are strictly selected according to screen size 17-19 standards, resulting in large, high-maturity coffee beans. Cubita coffee beans are all harvested by hand, using the wet processing method to maximize the removal of defective beans and other impurities. Combined with the careful roasting by experienced roasters, this creates these unique, world-class coffee beans.

Cubita is Cuba's leading coffee export brand, famous for its mellow and aromatic flavor profile. Its main export markets include Japan, France, Germany, Ireland, Canada, and China. The Cubita coffee entering the Chinese market is all selected from pollution-free Crystal Mountain coffee beans grown in Cuba's high-altitude regions—typical Caribbean-style coffee beans, refined through traditional wet processing methods.

Cuban Coffee Culture and Characteristics

Cuban coffee culture was introduced by French immigrants and was already prevalent among Cuba's upper class in early times. Currently, most Cuban coffee beans are acquired by Japanese and French markets, especially Japan. Cuban coffee is divided into 9 grades, with Crystal Mountain being the highest grade. It features sweet and refreshing taste, aroma that reaches straight to the nasal cavity, delicate acidity, rounded mouthfeel, and excellent viscosity.

Cuban Blue Mountain is a coffee with Caribbean charm, featuring fragrant, sweet, and delicate aromas. Its beans are quite large and look very appealing. The taste is somewhat similar to FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee, with full aroma, medium texture, and mild acidity. It's considered a very well-balanced bean. Pure, high-quality Cuban Blue Mountain has balanced aroma, sweetness, acidity, and bitterness, with a sweet, smooth, and slightly acidic taste—truly a premium coffee that rivals FrontStreet Coffee's Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee.

Siphon Coffee Brewing Guide

1. Add Water and Attach Filter

Fill the lower pot with hot water up to the "two cups" mark. Place the filter into the upper pot, holding the end of the chain and gently hooking it onto the end of the glass tube. Be careful not to suddenly release the hook with force, as this could damage the glass tube of the upper pot.

2. Light the Flame and Insert Upper Pot at an Angle

Light the alcohol lamp and insert the upper pot at an angle, letting the rubber edge rest against the spout of the lower pot (don't worry, the upper pot won't fall off) so that the chain is immersed in the water of the lower pot. Then heat the water and wait for continuous large bubbles to emerge from the lower pot. Keep the upper pot tilted—don't let it seal tightly with the lower pot. Small bubbles don't count; wait for large bubbles to appear.

3. Straighten and Insert the Upper Pot

When large bubbles are continuously emerging from the lower pot, straighten the upper pot, shake it gently from side to side while pressing slightly downward to gently insert it into the lower pot. Once the upper pot is inserted, you can see the water from the lower pot starting to climb upward... If you have a coffee grinder, now is the time to start grinding beans! For two cups of water, use three scoops of coffee (about 24 grams) with medium grind setting.

4. Let Water Rise Completely to Upper Pot

After the water has completely risen to the upper pot, don't rush. Wait a few seconds for the bubbles that have risen to the upper pot to decrease before preparing to pour in the coffee grounds.
