The Sigri Estate Story

Sigri AA is one of Asia's most renowned coffee brands, hailing from W.R. Carpenters & Co., which also owns the Bunnum Wo brand. W.R. Carpenters operates six large-scale farms and two major wet and dry processing facilities in Papua New Guinea, annually exporting over 1.6 million kilograms of high-quality coffee beans. Their primary export markets include the United States of America, Germany, Australia, Japan, France, Spain, Sweden, Singapore, Canada, and New Zealand. Today's featured product represents the essence of this international brand.

Located in the western highlands of Papua New Guinea, these coffee beans are cultivated at altitudes of 5-6,000 feet (approximately 1,600 meters). The grading system includes five main categories: AA, A, B, AB, and PB. This particular batch of Sigri represents the highest AA grade. Additionally, Sigri has pioneered a unique three-stage washing method. What exactly is this three-stage washing process? It involves three 24-hour washing cycles to achieve complete pulp removal, followed by natural sun-drying to reduce moisture content.

This batch consists of new beans harvested in late May 2009, displaying grass-green coloration and intact appearance. In the coffee world, this is known as a versatile bean suitable for diverse roasting profiles – and this is the one!

Brewing Recommendations

The body is exceptionally thick and rich with a strong oily sensation. The flavor profile is complex, rich, and powerful. For those who enjoy bold flavors, love espresso, or prefer full-bodied pour-over and syphon coffee, you might opt for a darker roast. The cup profile delivers an intensity similar to FrontStreet Coffee's Mandheling, yet without the medicinal herb notes typical of Mandheling varieties. The sweetness is also significantly more pronounced. For acidity enthusiasts, the light roast profile will leave a lasting impression.

Papua New Guinea Coffee Region

Papua New Guinea is an island nation in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, located on the eastern half of New Guinea Island. It borders Indonesia's Papua province to the west, with Australia and the Solomon Islands separated by sea to the south and east, respectively.

Papua New Guinea features an equatorial rainforest climate with high temperatures and abundant rainfall, creating extensive tropical rainforests. Due to its predominantly rainforest ecosystem, the country boasts remarkable biodiversity. The flora mainly consists of tall, broad-leaved trees reaching dozens of meters in height, while the fauna is primarily composed of birds and primates.

Approximately 75% of Papua New Guinea's coffee production comes from small farms, many established within forests or deep forest areas, nearly isolated from the outside world. Combined with the country's highland elevations of 1,300-1,800 meters, the relative quality is exceptionally high. Most coffee cultivation here relies on natural growing conditions because transportation challenges and high costs make fertilizers and pesticides difficult to deliver to farms. Consequently, most of the country's coffee is organically grown.
