What is Drip Bag Coffee? How to Brew Perfect Drip Bag Coffee? How to Make Japanese Iced Pour-Over Coffee?
Have you felt it, my friends? As the thunderstorms of the past two days have passed, the temperature has begun to slowly rise, and the season for enjoying iced coffee is back!!! However, while we crave coffee, we don't want to go out. So, is there a simple way to make delicious iced coffee at home? Indeed there is! The versatile FrontStreet Coffee pulls out from their pocket:
"Drip bag coffee" So today, let's follow FrontStreet Coffee to see how to easily make delicious iced coffee with drip bags!
What is Drip Bag Coffee?
As usual, let's first briefly introduce drip bag coffee! Simply put, drip bag coffee is a convenient, portable, and easy-to-make "pour-over coffee"! By pre-grinding coffee beans and sealing them in a special non-woven fabric filter bag, it becomes convenient to carry and easy to prepare. The filter bag acts as filter paper to strain coffee grounds during brewing; while the two paper "ears" on the sides that hold the bag suspended function as the dripper. Simply by hanging these two "ears" on the rim of a cup, the filter bag can be supported for coffee brewing, which is why it's called "drip bag" coffee.
The preparation method for drip bag coffee can be either simple or sophisticated. Sophisticated preparation uses methods similar to pour-over, with precise parameter control to produce flavorful black coffee; while simple preparation is really simple - water temperature and pouring are all done by eye~ This approach better suits the portable nature of drip bags~
How to Make Delicious Iced Coffee with Drip Bags?
Actually, it's quite simple. There are two ways to make iced coffee: one is the drip method that you can drink immediately, and the other is the immersion method that requires longer waiting time! But regardless of the method, the preparation is very simple~ Now let FrontStreet Coffee elaborate on this.
Method 1: Ice Pour-Over Style
Yes, adopting the iced brewing method of pour-over coffee is the fastest way to get a cup of iced drip bag coffee. Regular iced pour-over increases extraction rate by adjusting to a finer grind on the basis of hot brewing, then increases concentration by adjusting the coffee-to-water ratio, and finally adds ice cubes for cooling and dilution - completing a delicious iced pour-over coffee.
However, drip bag coffee already has the coffee pre-ground, so we cannot increase extraction efficiency by adjusting the grind size. Therefore, we need to find another way to increase extraction efficiency by adjusting other parameters. For example: increasing water temperature. The reason we need to increase the extraction rate is because we want to reduce water amount, increase coffee concentration, and leave enough space for ice dilution. This way, when the ice cubes melt and quickly cool the coffee, it won't taste weak and thin. The regular brewing water temperature is 92°C (for light roast beans) / 88°C (for dark roast beans), and we can increase this by 2°C~ For friends without a thermometer, you can boil the water directly and then let it sit for about 1 minute (if pouring from the kettle, extend this by 30 seconds if not pouring from the kettle)~ Normally, one drip bag contains about 10g of coffee grounds. The ice pour-over ratio of coffee to water to ice is 1:10:6, which translates to 10g of coffee, brewed with 100ml of hot water, and 60g of ice cubes. The brewing steps are as follows:
① First, use a small amount of hot water for blooming, just enough to cover the coffee grounds, which is approximately 20ml of water (still recommend using a scale).
② Then, with a small water flow, pour the remaining 80ml of hot water in small circles. If you don't have a narrow-spout kettle at home, you can use a regular kettle to pour, then use a small spoon or stick to stir about 10 times.
③ Wait for the coffee to finish dripping, then you can pour the drip bag coffee into a container with ice cubes to mix, and a refreshing iced drip bag coffee is complete~
Method 2: Cold Brew Style
Cold brew is quite simple. Just prepare any sealable container, then tear open the drip bag, and pour the coffee grounds from the drip bag into the container along with room temperature water according to the ratio (keep the empty drip bag shell, don't throw it away). The coffee-to-water ratio is 1:10, meaning 10g of coffee grounds requires 100ml of room temperature water.
FrontStreet Coffee suggests using multiple bags for extraction at once, as one drip bag might only yield about 80ml of coffee (the grounds will absorb water). Then place it in the refrigerator to extract overnight, and the next day, use the drip bag to filter out the coffee grounds~
After filtering, you can first taste the concentration. If the concentration is suitable, you don't need to add ice; if it's too strong, simply add ice cubes to dilute~
(Using a short cup can lead to soaking, so it's best to use a tall cup~)
