Coffee Latte Art Tutorial! What are the Key Points for Making Leaf and Layered Heart Designs? Latte Coffee Art
FrontStreet Coffee's Latte Art Class: Creating the Leaf Pattern
FrontStreet Coffee's latte art class is back in session! Today, FrontStreet Coffee brings you the latte art pattern: "Leaf". Although it may appear challenging, its creation method is quite similar to the "Thousand Layer Heart". Both patterns require even shaking to create delicate stripes, but the difference lies in the additional pulling step for the leaf. This means that once you've mastered the shaking technique for the Thousand Layer Heart, mastering the leaf pattern becomes effortless!
Now, let's dive into today's tutorial! For the previous latte art classes, you can click the blue links for direct access: "Basic Latte Art Pattern Tutorial: White Heart" and "Advanced Pattern from White Heart: Thousand Layer Heart".
Milk Foam Thickness
Since the leaf and Thousand Layer Heart patterns require highly fluid milk foam to create delicate stripes, the milk foam requirements must also be silky thin foam. Foam that's too thick becomes difficult to shake, while foam that's too thin can cause the pattern to distort. Therefore, FrontStreet Coffee recommends using milk foam of the same thickness as for the Thousand Layer Heart - simply froth milk from 5/10 full to 6/10 full.
Milk Integration Amount
The leaf pattern also requires strong convection to allow the bottom pattern to flow back and form a wrapping effect. Therefore, we need to use a small amount of milk for integration, which keeps the liquid surface at a lower position (5/10 full is sufficient). This creates stronger convection when injecting milk foam for latte art later.
It's worth mentioning that the specific milk pitcher position should be chosen based on your latte art pitcher. Many friends use smaller capacity pitchers. These small milk pitchers typically cannot be tilted too much due to capacity limitations. If the tilt angle is insufficient, the pitcher spout cannot get close to the liquid surface, making it difficult for the milk foam to leave white stripes on the coffee surface (making it difficult to create patterns). Therefore, when your milk pitcher cannot be tilted sufficiently, you need to increase the integration amount to raise the liquid surface height, thereby obtaining a suitable position for pattern creation.
Leaf Pattern Injection Point
The injection point for the leaf pattern differs significantly from the White Heart and Thousand Layer Heart. The injection points for both heart-shaped patterns are located at the 1/4 position. While shaking in place, the heart pattern gradually moves to the center as the cup is pulled back.
However, if the leaf pattern's starting point is also at the 1/4 position, the entire pattern will shift upward. Additionally, it requires a backward pulling motion, so we need to place its starting point in the center, leaving enough space for the pattern created during the backward shaking.
How to Shake
As mentioned at the beginning, the difference between the leaf and Thousand Layer Heart patterns is that the Thousand Layer Heart involves almost stationary shaking, while the leaf pattern requires backward pulling while shaking to create the main part of the leaf! This technique requires considerable skill, so FrontStreet Coffee recommends practicing with dish soap and soy sauce first. Once you've mastered it thoroughly, you can move on to practical application with milk and espresso.
Practical Pattern Creation
Now let's move to the practical session. First, we integrate to 6/10 full cup capacity, then inject milk foam at the center point for latte art. But remember, don't rush to pull back at the beginning. Stay in place for a while to create the two lobes of the leaf, then shake evenly backward! As we pull back and shake, the pitcher spout needs to be raised slightly, which makes the stripes clearer and maintains proper spacing! But be careful not to raise it too much - 0.5-1cm is sufficient! When approaching the cup edge, don't rush to finish. First, lower the pitcher spout and pour more milk foam to form a heart shape, then raise the spout to complete the pattern. This will create a more beautiful leaf pattern~~
