Panamanian Coffee

Panamanian coffee is highly recognized in the global coffee market, especially the Geisha variety. In 2005, the Geisha grown by Hacienda La Esmeralda gained fame in the coffee world after winning the Best of Panama (BOP) competition and fetching high prices at auction.

Panama is located in Central America, bordering Colombia and Costa Rica, with the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Caribbean Sea to the north. It forms an S-shape connecting North and South America, earning it the nickname "World's Bridge."

The entire territory of Panama features varied terrain with numerous valleys. Apart from the coastal plains in the north and south, most areas are mountainous. Located near the equator, Panama has a tropical maritime climate with humid days and cool nights, with an average annual temperature of 23-27°C. The year is divided into dry and rainy seasons, with average annual precipitation reaching 1500-2500 millimeters. Additionally, Panama is rich in natural resources, with multiple rivers and forests covering 57% of the land area due to environmental protection efforts. Coffee is primarily grown in the volcanic regions near Chiriquí Province in western Panama, benefiting from fertile volcanic soil, high altitude, moderate rainfall, and microclimates that make it an excellent coffee-producing region. Agriculture, like tourism, has become one of Panama's important industries.

Boquete Region

The main coffee producing regions are Boquete, Volcán-Candela, and Renacimiento. These regions are all located around three of the country's volcanoes: Volcán Barú, El Valle, and La Yeguada. The volcanic ash from these volcanoes makes the soil more fertile and better suited for coffee cultivation.

Boquete is the most well-known coffee producing region in Panama, as it is home to several renowned estates such as Hacienda La Esmeralda, Elida Estate, and Duncan Estate. This is also attributed to the excellent growing conditions in the Boquete region. Here, coffee is grown at altitudes between 1200-2000 meters, with temperatures ranging from 11°C to 27°C - neither too cold nor excessively hot, while also featuring significant temperature variations that allow coffee cherries to develop flavors slowly. Additionally, moderate rainfall, fertile land from volcanic ash, abundant sunlight, and special local microclimates enable this region to produce high-quality coffee.

Geisha Blends

Currently, FrontStreet Coffee offers two Geisha blend coffee beans. One is Strawberry Candy from the Mirasu Estate in Costa Rica, which is a blend of Geisha, ET47, SL28, and Maico varieties. The other is the Mariposa coffee beans from the Boquete region of Panama, composed of 70% Geisha along with Caturra and Catuai varieties.

Initially, Panama mainly cultivated Caturra and Catuai varieties. When Geisha arrived in Panama in 1970, it was not widely planted due to its fragile nature until it was accidentally discovered by Hacienda La Esmeralda and gained fame after winning competitions. Previously, in pursuit of higher yields, Geisha varieties were mixed with Caturra and Catuai coffee trees for cultivation. However, harvesting Geisha varieties separately was quite difficult, so they were harvested together. Later, to highlight the characteristics of Geisha, the three varieties began to be collected separately, and finally mixed proportionally before export.

This Mariposa coffee bean from Panama's Boquete region, available at FrontStreet Coffee, uses washed processing and is medium-light roasted. FrontStreet Coffee uses V60 with a 1:15 ratio and water temperature of 92°C for brewing. After brewing, you'll notice white floral aromas, with lemon-like acidity upon tasting, along with berry and grape flavors, and a hazelnut-like aftertaste. The mouthfeel is as smooth and clean as honey.
