Ethiopian Coffee

Ethiopia is located on the East African plateau southwest of the Red Sea and is a landlocked country. It borders Djibouti, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Kenya, and Eritrea. The country is predominantly mountainous plateau, with most of it belonging to the Ethiopian plateau, which accounts for 2/3 of the nation. The Great Rift Valley runs through the entire territory, with an average elevation of nearly 3,000 meters.

Ethiopian landscape

Ethiopia has an average elevation of 2,450 meters. Due to the high altitude, Ethiopia's average annual temperature is 16°C, maintaining a cool climate throughout the year. The year is roughly divided into dry and rainy seasons. The country is rich in water resources, earning it the reputation as the "Water Tower of East Africa," and it has nearly 50 volcanoes. Abundant water resources, high-altitude mountain regions, and fertile soil from volcanic ash create ideal conditions for coffee cultivation.

Yirgacheffe

Ethiopia has many famous coffee-producing regions, such as Sidamo, Jima, Harrar, Guji, and Yirgacheffe. Among them, Guji and Yirgacheffe originally belonged to the Sidamo region but became independent coffee-producing regions due to their unique flavors.

Yirgacheffe coffee beans

Yirgacheffe is a small town in Ethiopia, located in the northwestern part of the Sidamo province. It is one of the highest altitude coffee-producing regions in Ethiopia, with elevations ranging from 1,750 to 2,200 meters. This area has been wetland since ancient times. In the local language, "Yirga" means to settle down, while "Cheffe" means wetland. Therefore, the climate here is humid and mild, with abundant rainfall, fertile land, and sufficient sunlight, making the region highly suitable for coffee cultivation and nurturing coffee beans with unique floral and fruity aromas and ever-changing distinctive flavors. FrontStreet Coffee offers a washed Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee bean as an introductory selection, featuring jasmine fragrance, lemon-like acidity, and fruit flavors of orange and berries, with a refreshing and silky mouthfeel.

Banko Gotiti Cooperative

Under Yirgacheffe, there are several well-known sub-regions, including Kochere and Gedeb. Gedeb is a township located 60 kilometers from Yirgacheffe town. In Gedeb, villages such as Worka Sakaro, Halo Bariti, Banko Gotiti, and Banko Dahato produce coffee.

Banko Gotiti Cooperative

The Banko Gotiti Cooperative was originally part of the Worka Cooperative under the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union (YCFCU). Later, as people pursued traceability of coffee beans, about 300 farmers from Banko Gotiti became independent and established the Banko Gotiti Cooperative in 2012. Banko Gotiti village was one of the first village areas to become independent. Many farmers were originally members of the Worka Cooperative, so their cultivation techniques are quite good. After harvesting their coffee berries, farmers here uniformly hand them over to the cooperative for processing.
