Tanzanian Coffee

The African region is home to many renowned coffee-producing countries, such as Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Tanzania. Among them, Tanzania stands as one of Africa's coffee giants and has earned the title of "Coffee Gentleman" in Europe.

Tanzania is located in eastern Africa, south of the equator, bordering eight countries including Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda, with the Indian Ocean to its east. Tanzania's terrain gradually descends from northwest to southeast in a stepped pattern. The eastern coastal areas are lowlands, while the western inland plateau covers more than half of the country's total area. The Great Rift Valley splits into eastern and western branches from Lake Malawi, running north-south through the country. Additionally, Kibo Peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in the northeastern part of the country reaches an elevation of 5,895 meters, making it the highest peak in Africa.

The eastern coast and inland lowlands of Tanzania have a tropical savanna climate, while the western inland plateau features a tropical highland climate, with average annual temperatures ranging between 21°C-26°C. Although the country receives relatively low rainfall, with 80% of regions receiving less than 1,000 millimeters annually, Tanzania boasts numerous rivers and lakes with abundant hydropower resources. Coffee beans are primarily grown in the Mount Kilimanjaro and southern regions. Mount Kilimanjaro is an extinct volcano with high elevation, giving Tanzanian coffee a rich body, moderate acidity, and intense aroma. Tanzanian coffee was developed under German and British colonial rule and quickly gained popularity among Europeans, joining the ranks of premium products, thus earning the title "Coffee Gentleman" from Europeans.

Kilimanjaro Region

Tanzania's coffee-growing regions are widely distributed, mainly including Kilimanjaro, Ruvuma, Mbeya, Kigoma, and other areas, with 90% being small farms. Among these, the most renowned coffee-producing region is the Kilimanjaro region.

Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in northeastern Tanzania and is the highest mountain on the African continent, with an elevation of 5,895 meters and year-round snow cover. It mainly consists of three extinct volcanoes: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. Coffee is cultivated at elevations between 1,050-2,500 meters. The high elevation, volcanic soil, and pure meltwater sources make this region ideal for coffee cultivation. The coffee harvest period in the Kilimanjaro region runs from July to December each year, with main varieties including Bourbon, Typica, and Kent.

Typica

The Typica variety is one of the most genetically important Arabica coffee varieties in the world. The plants are relatively tall, with lower yields and susceptibility to major diseases, but they produce excellent quality coffee and are suitable for cultivation at high elevations, where quality improves with altitude. This variety originated in Ethiopia and gradually spread, becoming widespread throughout Central America by the late 18th century. Until the 1940s, most coffee plantations in South and Central America grew Typica. However, due to its low yield and disease susceptibility, it was gradually replaced. Nevertheless, Typica is still cultivated in countries like Peru, Tanzania, and Jamaica, where it contributes to the famous Blue Mountain coffee in Jamaica.
