Panamanian Coffee

Panama is the southernmost country in Central America, bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, Costa Rica to the north, and Colombia to the south. It serves as a crucial isthmus connecting North and South America. Due to these geographical factors, Panama features complex and diverse microclimates. The east-to-west environment allows cold air currents to flow through the central mountain range and converge above 6,500 feet, creating a unique microclimate in the Boquete and Volcán Candela regions, making them the main coffee-producing areas of Panama. The surrounding land is rich in nutrients, and these fertile soils provide perfect growing conditions for coffee cultivation.

Volcán Production Area

The main coffee-producing regions are divided into Boquete, Volcán-Candela, and Renacimiento. These regions are all located around three volcanoes in the country: Volcán Baru, El Valle, and La Yeguada.

When discussing Panamanian coffee cultivation, many people immediately think of the Boquete region. However, in recent years, excellent estates from the Volcán region have frequently appeared in the Best of Panama (BOP) competition, even winning championships. The Volcán region sits at elevations of 1,200-1,600 meters, with less average rainfall than Boquete. However, its geographical location on the western side of Volcán Barú, volcanic soil, and high altitude同样 provide excellent growing conditions for coffee trees. In the early days, most of the Volcán region was dedicated to growing fruits and vegetables as cash crops, with only a few farmers cultivating coffee. Among them, the Hartmann family were pioneers in coffee cultivation in the Volcán region.

Hartmann Estate

Alois Strasil Hartmann (ancestor of the Hartmann family) was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now the Czech Republic). Due to political instability in his home country, he decided to start a new life abroad. Initially, Alois stayed in New York, USA, before eventually making his way to Panama. After several months, Alois found that he couldn't adapt to urban life in Panama City, so he moved along the mountain ranges to settle in the Volcán region. He later married and had a son, Hartmann Troetsch. Starting from 1940, Troetsch inherited his father's farmland, began land preparation work, and thus established the Hartmann Estate, which continues to this day.

During the initial development, the elder Hartmann decided to preserve most of the original forest land within the estate. This concept of native forest protection has continued to influence the third-generation estate managers who are now responsible for operations. Today, Hartmann Estate still maintains this tradition, with coffee cultivation areas accounting for only about 20% of the entire estate. Due to successful forest conservation, the estate hosts numerous native bird species, with the locally famous toucan becoming the estate's official logo. Currently, the estate is jointly operated by five children, with each taking responsibility for different aspects of coffee growth management, harvesting and processing, and estate tours. In 2013, they also acquired the Guarumo Coffee Farm, located north of Hartmann Estate. Currently, Hartmann Estate grows a wide variety of coffee varieties, including Typica, Caturra, Catuai, Bourbon, Pacamara, Maragogipe, and Geisha.
