How to Simply Brew Delicious Drip Bag Coffee
Although the flavor of drip bag coffee is far inferior to freshly ground pour-over coffee, its main advantage is convenience! It eliminates the tedious operations of pour-over coffee such as grinding, measuring, and technique. You just need to open it and add water to quickly get a cup of coffee.
However, what some friends don't realize is that making good drip bag coffee also requires attention to some details. It's not just about mindlessly pouring water in to make a decent cup of coffee. When you accidentally add too much water, it can easily dilute the coffee! So today, FrontStreet Coffee is here to share how to get delicious drip bag coffee in the simplest way (delicious within the scope of drip bag coffee)!
The Essential Factors for Brewing
First, we need to understand that the brewing essence of drip bag coffee and pour-over coffee is not very different. It's just that drip bags have everything prepared for you, saving you a lot of time and energy. So what we need to focus on are the "partial parameters" of pour-over coffee, applying them to drip bag coffee for brewing.
There are four points to pay attention to in pour-over coffee: grind size, ratio, water temperature, and brewing method. As mentioned at the beginning, grind size is not something we need to worry about because merchants will pre-grind the coffee beans and pack them into drip bags. So, we need to pay attention to the remaining three parameters.
Water Temperature Guidelines
Generally, FrontStreet Coffee does not recommend using freshly boiled water for brewing, as this can easily extract bitter over-extracted flavors. We can refer to the water temperature parameters for pour-over: use a temperature range of 90-93°C for light to medium roast drip bags; use a temperature range of 85-90°C for medium to dark roast drip bags.
Without a thermometer, a kettle of 300ml boiled hot water will lose temperature at a rate of about 2-3°C per minute, so you just need to boil the water and wait until it reaches the corresponding range.
Choosing the Right Cup
Next is the cup you use! It's best to use a "tall cup" with a capacity of 280ml or more for brewing drip bags. This can effectively prevent the drip bag from being soaked in water for a long time! If you use a shorter cup, during the brewing process, hot water can easily submerge half of the drip bag. Prolonged soaking can also easily extract bitter over-extracted flavors!
The reason for using a tall cup of 280ml or more is that drip bags generally contain about 10g of coffee powder. Taking 10g as an example, if you want to get coffee with appropriate concentration, its coffee-to-water ratio should be roughly the same as pour-over coffee. However, given the convenience of not using an electronic scale, we can control its range within a slightly larger margin. For example, FrontStreet Coffee uses a coffee-to-water ratio of 1:15 for pour-over, so controlling the drip bag coffee ratio between 1:14-1:17 would be more reasonable, which converts to about 140ml-170ml. In a large-capacity tall cup, this will only be at about half the height, so you don't have to worry about the drip bag being soaked.
Brewing Tutorial
Alright, with all preparations complete, we can start brewing!
Step One: Setup
Place your cup, open the drip bag package, take out the drip bag, tear open the seal, and hang it on the cup rim!
Step Two: First Pour and Bloom
After the hot water reaches the predetermined range, pour into the center of the drip bag until the water level reaches half of the bag, then wait for 10-15 seconds for blooming. (The coffee powder in drip bags doesn't have much gas, so it doesn't require long blooming time)
Step Three: Multiple Pours
Perform a second pour, this time filling the drip bag to nine-tenths full. After the water drips through, perform a third pour, also filling to nine-tenths full. Wait for the drip to complete, then pour hot water for the fourth time, again filling to nine-tenths full.
Step Four: Finish and Enjoy
After the dripping is complete, you can remove the drip bag and enjoy your coffee!
(If you find it too strong, you can add a small amount of hot water to adjust the concentration to your preferred taste~)
