The Rise of Temple Coffee

Recently, I heard an interesting discussion: "No brand understands how to make money from coffee better than Buddha."

Looking back over the past year, major temples have started entering the coffee business. Some people stand on the side of tea, criticizing young people for not understanding Buddhism and tea; others support coffee, arguing that both Buddhism and coffee came from the West, making the relationship between coffee and Buddhism closer.

Coffee at temple

Everyone has different opinions, but the reason temple coffee has become a topic of conversation actually has little to do with coffee itself.

People's attention to temple coffee stems from three factors: the contrast created by the collision of Eastern and Western cultures, the unique marketing approach of temple coffee, and the temple environment with Buddha's presence, making the consumption scene extraordinary.

Temple coffee shop interior

Opening coffee shops in temples is simply an additional business segment created because more young people, due to anxiety from life and work, come to temples seeking solace. After all, wherever there are young people, coffee will exist.

Zen-style coffee packaging

However, temple coffee shops sell more than just coffee—they further alleviate the anxiety of visitors through Zen-inspired product names and the temple environment.

In an era where people's emotions are often not valued and may even be dismissed as "being dramatic," temple coffee, starting with product names and packaging, thoughtfully addresses everyone who comes with anxiety. This might be the reason why temple coffee has become so popular.

Monk studying coffee

While the coffee industry is competing fiercely on material aspects (such as products, styles, prices...) to the point where others dare not approach, temple coffee takes a Zen approach starting from the spiritual level, directly elevating coffee to another realm, with the main focus being "I understand you." It's not without reason that it has become the focus of public attention.

With the rise of temple coffee, not only has it attracted a new generation of consumers, but even monks have begun studying coffee. This is not cultural invasion, but simply a trend in social interaction.

To make more people pay attention to and understand Buddhism, we need to create more things that the new generation will care about. Image source: Internet
