Unbelievable! Unbelievable! Absolutely outrageous!!! I can't believe my eyes—what kind of bizarre coffee combination am I seeing?!

Recently, I came across a very new type of "morning tea" on social media: rice noodle rolls + coffee! This is a novel combination where the soy sauce in rice noodle rolls is replaced with espresso. That's right! Poured directly in! I thought this was just an isolated bizarre example, but when I checked Xiaohongshu, I found over 10,000 posts about it. Opening it, I saw many breakfast posts shared by bloggers... Many netizens commented: "Even people from Guangdong are left speechless..."

Rice noodle rolls with coffee combination

Rice noodle rolls (cheong fun) are one of the most famous traditional Han Chinese snacks in Guangdong, belonging to the Cantonese cuisine. They originated in Longzhou during the Tang Dynasty, which is now Luoding City in Yunfu City, Guangdong Province. There are two main schools of rice noodle rolls: one made using cloth stretching called布拉肠粉 (bra-la cheong fun), and another directly steamed drawer-style rice noodle rolls.

Businesses in different regions adjust flavors according to local markets and customer preferences, adding local city names before "rice noodle rolls," such as Guangzhou's Xiguan rice noodle rolls or Chaozhou's Chaozhou rice noodle rolls.

Although coffee is an imported product, China has been growing coffee beans for many, many years. In recent years, coffee has continuously explored various combinations and breakthroughs to find a coffee culture truly suitable for Chinese people. The combination of coffee with traditional Chinese cuisine also proves that China's own coffee culture and times are constantly evolving.

However, some netizens find it quite surprising: "Although strange, it's eye-catching," "Breakfast and coffee both covered—energized for the whole morning," "I think this is cool, matching this Guangdong native's imagination of Shanghai," "If this actually hits the market, I'd definitely be willing to try it"...

The Evolution of Coffee Combinations in China

In fact, "coffee+" combinations began appearing in the Chinese market several years ago. For example, in 2021, a "coffee + fatty intestine noodle" combination from a time-honored fatty intestine noodle shop in Chengdu went viral on social media. This was from a fatty intestine noodle shop called "Yan Ji Time-Honored Fatty Intestine Noodle Shop" on Peihua East Road in Chengdu. The owner initially started a small coffee stall in his own fatty intestine noodle shop just for fun, which gradually spread online and attracted many netizens to visit and taste.

Eating a serving of fatty intestine noodles with a cup of coffee, having warm food with coffee, or even sesame flatbread + coffee, fried dough sticks + coffee... these combinations feel completely normal. They're just similar to meal combinations.

From Reasonable to Bizarre Combinations

But somehow, it gradually evolved into today's rice noodle rolls mixed with espresso, tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) mixed with espresso, or coffee + tofu pudding, coffee + black sesame paste... Can these embedded bizarre combinations actually taste good? Is there a risk of diarrhea after eating them???
