Andy Lau's Shocking Coffee Habit: 20+ Cups Daily!

Recently, Andy Lau discussed his impressive coffee consumption with Guo Fan (director of "The Wandering Earth") on a talk show, shocking all the guests present!

When the host asked what changes Guo Fan had while filming the sequel, Wu Jing said the only thing that remained unchanged was his massive coffee consumption... Then! Andy's competitive spirit kicked in, and he asked Guo Fan, "Who drinks more coffee, you or me?"

Guo Fan: "5-6 cups a day."
Andy: "I now drink over 20 cups..." Then he gestured with his hands to show the size of a coffee cup ⬇️

(It's definitely not the small sharing cup size...)

Wu Jing, who was sitting nearby, was completely shocked! He then joked that Andy's ageless appearance must come from drinking 20+ cups of coffee daily. He asked: "Don't you feel heart palpitations? Guo Fan was hospitalized from drinking too much coffee..."

Andy explained that he drinks a cup to refresh himself when he's not filming, and then continues shooting after drinking. Other beverages don't have the same refreshing effect, and he can't drink cold ones either. Due to excessive coffee consumption, his family doesn't allow him to drink coffee at home. The reason he loves filming so much is because he can secretly drink coffee (of course, he was joking).

The Viral Reaction

After the show aired, many article titles stated, "Wu Jing says Andy Lau's ageless appearance comes from drinking coffee." Some viewers, without watching the video, immediately commented in the comment section: "I'm going to drink coffee right away!" Some even said: "Drinking more coffee can keep you young, got it, I'm going to chug coffee now 💪"

A Word of Caution

Here's our advice to everyone:

Don't imitate this!
Definitely don't copy this!
Absolutely don't try this lightly!

Because everyone's physical constitution is different!

Although some studies suggest that substances in coffee like niacin, free fatty acids, caffeine, tannic acid, and polyphenols can accelerate skin metabolism, achieve antioxidant effects, and have skin-firming effects, this doesn't mean that drinking large amounts of coffee daily will definitely produce these effects!! You need to consider what type of coffee you drink, your daily intake, your skin condition, and whether you get enough rest!

Is it possible that Andy Lau drinks 20+ cups of coffee? It's possible, but this doesn't mean we should all drink coffee this way. Judging by the size of the coffee cup he gestured, this would be excessive for an ordinary person!!!

The Dangers of Excessive Coffee Consumption

Notably, Wu Jing mentioned on the show that the director was hospitalized due to drinking too much coffee, which shows that coffee is not as simple as it might seem.

For most people, excessive caffeine intake can cause accelerated heartbeat, palpitations, and other symptoms. If a person is under long-term work and mental stress without adequate rest, excessive caffeine intake can directly cause fainting.

Coffee is like alcohol - some people start experiencing rapid heartbeat and dizziness after just a couple of drinks, while others have exceptional tolerance and show few obvious symptoms even after drinking a lot. Andy's ability to drink 20+ cups of coffee daily suggests he belongs to the latter category... or perhaps, Andy has developed a serious dependency on coffee, simply put - coffee addiction.

Signs of Coffee Addiction

Research reports indicate that for some long-time heavy coffee drinkers, caffeine doesn't actually provide a real energy boost due to tolerance. However, they still feel more energetic after drinking coffee because of "ritualistic anesthesia."

Ritual of drinking coffee

This situation is similar to how alcohol gives people courage. Anthropologist Krystal D'costa once said: "As a psychoactive substance, coffee becomes the natural choice when we feel inefficient and mentally fatigued. Humans hope it can quickly enter the bloodstream through the brain, helping them stay alert and focused when they're not in optimal condition."

When humans develop coffee addiction, they might not show symptoms while drinking coffee, but when they reduce or stop consumption, they may experience headaches, stomach pain, general discomfort, drowsiness, and low mood.

Regardless of cup size, drinking coffee in the quantity that Andy does is not a healthy practice. Setting aside individual special circumstances, from a physiological perspective, prolonged heavy workload, work stress, and irregular rest can cause the body to produce large amounts of adenosine. When this binds to receptors, it causes fatigue and sleepiness. If you continue to consume large amounts of caffeine under these conditions, it can lead to:

Stomach Pain from Excessive Coffee Consumption When Tired and Stressed

Of course, consuming caffeine at this time can prevent adenosine from binding to receptors, but it also stimulates the production of more adenosine, which then participates in the body's neural and endocrine regulation by inhibiting various neurotransmitters, causing the previously inhibited neurotransmitters to be released in large quantities.

Among these, acetylcholine, which helps our gastrointestinal function, will be overproduced. Moderate amounts of acetylcholine can increase gastrointestinal contractility and gastric acid secretion, helping the body digest and absorb food. However, excessive amounts can cause stomach wall muscle contraction, producing symptoms like nausea, pain, and vomiting.

Excessive Coffee Consumption Stimulates Adrenaline Synthesis

When adrenaline surges, it can cause rapid breathing, accelerated heartbeat and blood flow, and increased oxygen consumption. Some people may feel oxygen-deprived, and in severe cases, may even faint or lose consciousness.

Excessive Caffeine Increases Liver Metabolic Burden

Small amounts of caffeine intake can reduce liver fibrosis during the process of caffeine binding to adenosine receptors, which has certain benefits for liver health. However, excessive intake increases the metabolic burden on the liver, thereby damaging liver function. This is especially harmful for people with pre-existing liver conditions.

The Final Word on Coffee Consumption

Although many modern medical studies show that coffee can be beneficial to health, these benefits are based on moderate consumption of black coffee (without sugar, milk, or any flavorings). We're not debating whether Andy really drinks 20+ cups of coffee, but based on practical observation, most people (no matter how much they can tolerate) generally start feeling dizzy and heart palpitations after about 4-5 cups (200ml/cup) per day. Therefore, just because some people can drink a lot doesn't mean everyone can!

While coffee is good, it's best not to overdo it!
