The Magic of Turkish Coffee

Since the ceremonial stove-top tea brewing became popular in the tea world, many coffee enthusiasts have been reminded of the seemingly miraculous process of making Turkish coffee that creates coffee from nothing.

Turkish coffee brewing process

In this era of specialty coffee dominance, when you open most coffee reference books and look at brewing equipment, you'll find various pour-over kettles, filter cones, siphon pots, moka pots, and so on. Finally, they always include the "Turkish pot," but often just briefly mention it... This has led many curious enthusiasts to search for related videos to learn about this magical vessel...

"Wow! Such a small coffee pot, why can it still brew a full pot of coffee after being reheated each time you pour some out? Can it really create something from nothing??" This is definitely the question that every first-time observer of Turkish coffee making will have. Some enthusiasts, driven by curiosity, even buy a Turkish coffee pot...

Then following online tutorials: "Use light to medium roast coffee beans ground to extra fine, fill the pot to 1/3 with grounds, then add water and heat until boiling. Remember to 'boil three times!'" Without sand, they directly place it on an electric ceramic stove/gas stove... Why doesn't it work! After pouring out the first batch of coffee, the pot can't be full again! Did the Turks in the video hide a tube in the sand?

The Principle of Turkish Coffee Brewing

The key is indeed the sand, but not because there's a tube hidden in it! Turkish coffee is made by utilizing the strong thermal conductivity of hot sand and the metal pot. Through continuous and uniform heating from the bottom and surrounding heat sources, the water at the bottom evaporates when heated, pushing up the fine coffee grounds to boil. Because of the uniform heating, each time a little coffee is poured out and the pot is returned to the sand, it immediately boils again, pushing up the coffee grounds.

However, if you can only heat from the bottom, it's difficult to achieve uniform heating. Also, due to the longer heating time, more water evaporates, so when the coffee grounds are heated a second time, they only boil and produce coarse foam, making it difficult to create the sensation of the coffee liquid filling the pot again.

Turkish Coffee Fortune Telling

Turkish coffee has gained attention not only for its seemingly "creation from nothing" process but also for its mysterious "fortune-telling" function! Around this time last year, a trend of Turkish coffee fortune-telling swept through China. People, while rejecting superstition one moment, would enthusiastically embrace fortune-telling the next. With a selling price of 30-40 yuan for a cup of Turkish coffee plus a 50 yuan fortune-telling fee, 90 yuan for "destiny prediction" could sell up to 300 cups per day at its peak...

However, what many don't realize is that Turkish coffee fortune-telling has continued to this day, causing many people's destinies to be ruined by it... The culture of Turkish coffee fortune-telling originated from European nobility who had nothing better to do, blessing/or subtly criticizing each other. Not just coffee, but tea leaves could also be used to read fortunes, as depicted in Harry Potter ⬇️

Is Turkish Coffee Fortune Telling Accurate?

After drinking Turkish coffee, there will be coffee grounds at the bottom of the cup. The cup is inverted onto the saucer, and the customer silently makes a wish while rotating it three times. The coffee grounds form different patterns on the cup walls.

Different patterns have different meanings: for example, forest patterns represent career advancement, large rectangular blank spaces represent wealth coming, hearts represent love, apples represent longevity... Of course, there are also negative ones: cats or foxes represent betrayal by close ones, snakes represent bad omens, arrows represent bad news, and so on. But actually, what you see depends entirely on your imagination. What the fortune teller interprets for you is not your future destiny, but rather everyone's inner thoughts.

Various coffee ground patterns

As the saying goes, "the more you divine, the thinner your destiny becomes; the more you tell fortunes, the lower your luck becomes." Sometimes, it's not the coffee grounds "bewitching" everyone, but rather people are too clear about what they want before fortune-telling. People are just hoping for good results. If the fortune-telling result is good, that's naturally best. In bad cases, people still won't change their minds and will continue to make mistakes. As a poem says, "You don't need to have your fortune told; your fate has been calculating you all along." The notion that coffee can predict everyone's destiny is merely an opportunity for people to see their own hearts. After the fortune-telling is complete, the coffee grounds are washed away. People believe the good predictions, while the bad ones are forgotten.

Coffee grounds being discarded

So Turkish coffee truly excels at "creating something from nothing," both in its unique heating method and in the minds of those who drink it. Whether the fortune-telling is accurate is unknown, but there's one thing that's very accurate! That is, after drinking Turkish coffee, the writer truly felt that life had opened up significantly. Because...

It's just too bitter! After drinking it, I felt that life really isn't that bitter!
