The Enhanced Experience of Sparkling Americano
FrontStreet Coffee believes that as a derivative of Americano coffee, sparkling Americano truly offers a more refreshing experience. Its characteristic lies in not affecting the original coffee flavor of Americano while adding that refreshing sensation of bubbles.
Some friends might ask, isn't sparkling Americano just adding bubbles? How good can it taste! These feelings are difficult to describe in words, but when you taste a cup of "dishwater" and a cup of "sparkling dishwater" at the same time, you'll be able to appreciate that difference. In terms of ingredients, sparkling Americano simply replaces the water in Americano with sparkling water, with other brewing parameters not significantly different from iced Americano. Everyone can refer to FrontStreet Coffee's parameters: 2 shots of espresso (40g), 120ml of sparkling water, and 100g of ice.
Choosing the Right Coffee Beans
Of course, if you're making sparkling Americano at home, you naturally don't want to make a cup of "dishwater," so choosing the right coffee beans is important. FrontStreet Coffee suggests selecting coffee beans with prominent flavors or those that lean toward fruity notes, as the extracted espresso combined with sparkling water will taste better.
If you already have single-origin beans used for pour-over at home, you can also try using them to extract espresso. As long as the extraction parameters are appropriate, you can still extract decent espresso. (To help everyone achieve coffee freedom, we've used FrontStreet Coffee's Red Cherry, FrontStreet Coffee's Strawberry Candy, FrontStreet Coffee's Flower Queen, and FrontStreet Coffee's Panama Geisha beans. They all belong to medium-light roast and have excellent flavor performance when made into Americano, without sharp acidity or raw astringency.)
Alternative Brewing Method
For friends who don't have an espresso machine at home, don't worry—you can also make high-concentration coffee liquid through pour-over. The parameters differ somewhat from regular extraction, and everyone can refer to FrontStreet Coffee's parameters:
Coffee dose: 20g
Grind size: 80% pass-through through #20 sieve
Water temperature: 93°C
Coffee liquid extracted: 80ml
First, pour 40ml of water and let it bloom for 2 minutes, then pour another 80ml of water in the second stage, wait for the drip filtration to complete, and you'll get 80ml of coffee liquid.
The Science Behind Pouring Technique
Although sparkling Americano is very similar to regular Americano, there's one difference: sparkling water contains sufficient carbon dioxide. If you pour coffee in directly as usual, you'll likely see this scene:
The crema from the espresso encounters the large amount of carbon dioxide gushing out from the sparkling water, causing the crema to expand rapidly and eventually overflow. Then, due to the large influx of carbon dioxide, the crema becomes unstable and quickly disintegrates, forming this "lumpy" texture.
Besides looking unappealing, the large amount of crema foam produced presents a bitter taste and doesn't taste good. Moreover, the significant loss of carbon dioxide from the sparkling water causes this sparkling Americano to lose its soul. Therefore, the key to making sparkling Americano lies in how to pour the espresso. Regarding this, FrontStreet Coffee has summarized these two important points.
Two Key Points for Perfect Sparkling Americano
The first point is to scrape off the crema. While crema is the soul of espresso itself, it's not very important for Americano, and it's even a nightmare for sparkling water. Scraping off the crema can reduce much of the bubbling, at least preventing the appearance of that rich "lumpy" foam.
The second point is to pour the espresso slowly and gently. The principle is actually similar to creating layers in dirty coffee. If you pour with too much force, the coffee liquid will rush to the bottom all at once, causing bubbles to gush out simultaneously inside the cup within a short time, which easily leads to rich foam formation.
The most ideal method is to place a spoon at the mouth of the cup and pour the espresso into the spoon, thereby reducing the impact force caused by the height difference. The espresso slowly permeates into the sparkling water, which produces the least amount of foam.
