Can People With Gout Drink Coffee? Latest Research Shows Coffee Consumption May Reduce Gout Risk!
Coffee Research Reveals Health Benefits
Researchers seem to have become addicted to coffee studies lately. On one hand, Japanese scientists have researched how to more effectively process coffee grounds with low carbon emissions, developing coffee ground chocolate. On the other hand, cardiology experts have shown that drinking coffee not only has no direct effect on heart rhythm but also that moderate coffee consumption is beneficial for heart health and longevity. Recently, Japanese medical researchers have used data analysis to show that drinking coffee can actually reduce the risk of gout!
According to a report from Nikkei Asia on April 5th, a research team from Japan's National Defense Medical College and Osaka University studied more than 150,000 Japanese people who underwent genomic individual difference analysis surveys. They conducted a correlation analysis between weekly coffee consumption frequency and uric acid levels, as well as gout incidence rates.
Understanding Gout and Coffee's Effects
Gout symptoms develop when uric acid levels in the blood increase. Large amounts of uric acid circulate throughout the body's joints through the bloodstream, causing varying degrees of pain in different joints. According to previous understanding, it was believed that the caffeine contained in coffee could be metabolized into uric acid in the body, potentially causing elevated uric acid levels and gout attacks.
However, numerous domestic and international studies in recent years have found that drinking coffee not only does not increase the risk of gout attacks but actually has certain preventive effects. On one hand, this is because the metabolic product of caffeine in the body is methyl urate, which differs from urate and does not deposit in the body or form tophi. On the other hand, coffee has weak alkaline properties that can maintain the body's acid-base balance, improve insulin levels, and also has certain diuretic effects, thereby promoting uric acid excretion.
Scientific Evidence Supporting Coffee's Benefits
A survey published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that drinking a certain amount of coffee daily helps lower blood uric acid levels. In 2007, a 12-year follow-up study by researchers from institutions including the University of British Columbia in Canada and Harvard Medical School in the United States showed that, compared to non-coffee drinkers, the risk of gout incidence for those who drink 4 to 5 cups of coffee daily could be reduced by 40%. A research result presented by Song Xin, a nutritionist from the Department of Nutrition at Beijing Chaoyang Hospital of Capital Medical University, showed that coffee has the effect of quietly reducing serum uric acid levels and gout risk: men who drink 4-5 cups of coffee daily can reduce gout incidence by 40% and 59%.
Although multiple studies have proven coffee's role in preventing gout, there was a lack of relevant statistical analysis and data support. Therefore, this Japanese research team divided weekly coffee consumption frequency from 0 to 7 times into eight stages for data analysis. The analysis results showed that for each additional day of coffee consumption per week, the risk of gout incidence can be reduced by approximately 25% (however, factors such as how many times per day, how much coffee is consumed, and whether milk and sugar affect uric acid levels were not included in the scope of consideration).
Expert Opinions and Limitations
Therefore, long-term coffee consumption helps alleviate the incidence of gout, and it is believed that through future analysis of coffee components, the mechanisms and prevention methods for gout development may be revealed. However, it is currently unclear which components in coffee can reduce gout attacks.
Professor Hirotaka Matsuo from Japan's National Defense Medical College stated: "Coffee has long been considered by many to be closely related to gout attacks. However, the analysis from this study shows that increasing the number of days drinking coffee does not affect uric acid level fluctuations and actually reduces the risk of gout attacks."
In addition, scholars participating in this study also stated that gout attacks are more closely related to weight gain and lifestyle. Life stress, as well as increases in body fat and vascular fat, can more directly affect elevated uric acid levels.
Important Considerations
Although coffee can be beneficial for heart health and reduce the risk of gout attacks, in many cases, these benefits are based on moderate consumption of pure black coffee without sugar or milk, and when the drinker themselves does not have conditions that could be affected by coffee.
At the same time, coffee is not some magic elixir. When the body experiences discomfort, it's essential to seek medical attention promptly. Paying daily attention to dietary habits and lifestyle, exercising more, and getting adequate rest are the best ways to maintain health.
