Last Updated: 2026/01/27, While the moka pot stands as Italy's iconic national coffee maker, gracing virtually every household, the southern Italian city of Naples boasts its own traditional brewing apparatus. This distinctive device features a unique design where the spout faces downward during the brewing process. Known as the Neapolitan flip pot, it offers a unique coffee brewing experience that differs from conventional methods.

The Moka pot is Italy's national-level brewing device, found in almost every household. However, in the southern Italian city of Naples, people use another traditional device to brew coffee. This particular device features a spout that faces downward during brewing. This pot is known as the Neapolitan (or "Napoletana"), also called the inverted pot.

The inverted pot has a structure very similar to the Moka pot, divided into three parts: an upper chamber, a coffee filter compartment, and a lower chamber. However, its brewing principle differs significantly from the Moka pot, as this is a purely filtering-type coffee device. Below, FrontStreet Coffee will show you how this pot brews coffee.

First, fill the coffee filter compartment with coffee grounds. Both sides of the filter compartment have filter holes. Unscrew one side's lid and fill it with coffee grounds. The grind size should be slightly finer than pour-over coffee, approximately 80% passing through a #20 sieve. There's no fixed amount for the coffee grounds - it depends on whether you prefer stronger or weaker coffee. The inside of the filter compartment will have a raised ring line, which can serve as a standard for the amount of coffee grounds to fill.

Next is adding water, which is poured into the upper chamber (the one without the spout). The water level should be approximately at the raised scale line on the pot body. Room temperature water can be used (hot water would burn your hands). After adding water, place the filter compartment, then put on the "lower chamber." It can then be placed on a gas stove for brewing.

Next, wait for the water to boil. There will be two small holes on the upper chamber. When the water boils, it will flow out from these small holes, so you can also determine when to turn off the heat by observing whether water is coming out of these holes.

After turning off the heat, you need to invert the pot and wait for the boiling water inside to pass through the coffee filter compartment into the lower chamber. This process takes about 5 minutes.

Afterward, you can remove the upper chamber and filter compartment, put on the dedicated lid for the lower chamber, and pour out the coffee.

The characteristic of this pot is its convenience, with a flavor that leans more toward Italy's rich taste and aroma. However, due to its convenience and simple operation, it's a coffee device especially suitable for travel, hiking, and camping activities.
