云南阿拉比卡咖啡豆在中国的发展趋势:2022年价格分析与市场洞察
Yunnan coffee is experiencing new changes after several years of price decline. Since 2021, an increasing number of Chinese-style tea and coffee brands have included Yunnan coffee beans on their menus. The rise of the new wave of "China-chic" and domestic coffee consumption trends has prompted more people to explore Yunnan's coffee-growing regions in search of unique coffee flavors. The soaring demand for Yunnan coffee beans has driven up their prices.
A "second-generation coffee farmer" from Yunnan mentioned in an interview with Yicai that the spot price of Yunnan coffee beans has increased by about 65% this year. In 2021, the purchase price of first-grade commercial coffee beans rose to 24-26 yuan per kilogram, and after the 2022 Spring Festival, it further increased to 34 yuan per kilogram.
Yunnan's Yunlan Manor, one of the representatives of Yunnan's specialty coffee, also mentioned in an interview that they have received too many orders this year, with exceptionally high demand for coffee beans. However, the cost of coffee beans has also doubled or tripled. Since specialty coffee beans already command higher prices, with the accelerating cost increases, the selling price may exceed market acceptance, resulting in thinner profit margins. Prices continue to rise recently, and some downstream customers are troubled by price and supply issues.
The current surge in Yunnan coffee bean prices is related to the global pandemic. The pandemic has caused significant delays in the supply chain between coffee-producing and coffee-consuming countries, with average delivery times extending from the previous 1-2 months to 3-4 months. While market supply has decreased, coffee consumption has been rising rapidly, especially in China's coffee market. The demand exceeding supply has driven up Yunnan coffee bean prices.
Recently, an online article suggested that Yunnan coffee beans are being used as "wedding clothes" for some international coffee brands, a view that some coffee industry professionals do not agree with. The cultivation levels among coffee farmers vary, and if traders need thousands of tons of coffee beans, they must acquire "hundred-family beans," which leads to batch instability issues and affects overall quality and pricing.
Although Yunnan has unique advantages for developing its coffee industry, it also has its limitations. Related talent and industrial chain support are relatively underdeveloped, and being far from ports makes it difficult to escape its identity as a raw material production base. In recent years, the country has established coffee trading centers in Yunnan and Chongqing, intending to influence coffee trading prices. However, compared with other producing regions, Yunnan's production areas do not have significant advantages, making it difficult to gain pricing power. The effectiveness of these trading centers has been mediocre.
Pu'er City in Yunnan, where both Pu'er tea and Pu'er coffee are characteristic agricultural products, is one of the "fifty-billion-yuan industries" being focused on and developed, bringing enormous potential for rural development. During the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, the goal is to build Pu'er into an important global production base for specialty coffee and high-quality standardized commercial coffee, as well as Asia's most influential coffee trading center and roasting processing hub.
To this end, Ninger County in Pu'er City is also making efforts to achieve these goals. According to a Xinhua News Agency report on March 1, the county achieved a total coffee output value of 278 million yuan in 2021, and is expected to exceed 300 million yuan in 2022. With investments in policies, projects, funds, technology, and talent, some production areas have introduced new Arabica varieties based on the original "Catimor," gradually improving local coffee quality and enabling better selling prices.
According to data from the Coffee Finance Network, the Yunnan coffee price index closed at 27.56 yuan per kilogram on March 7.
