Coffee Grinder Cleaning and Maintenance Tutorial: How to Thoroughly Clean Manual and Electric Grinders
Nowadays, many friends enjoy grinding beans and brewing coffee at home. Of course, many friends also consult FrontStreet Coffee about purchasing coffee grinders. Here's a unified response: FrontStreet Coffee is not a professional mechanical equipment reviewer, and most grinders on the market have not been experienced by FrontStreet Coffee, so we cannot provide specific recommendations for particular grinder models.
However, discerning customers can also refer to FrontStreet Coffee's general views on grinder performance requirements, avoid the pitfalls that FrontStreet Coffee knows and shares, and choose a grinder that you recognize and trust. While FrontStreet Coffee cannot precisely recommend specific grinder brands and models, we believe that purchasing a suitable grinder is an important step, but subsequent maintenance and care are even more crucial.
Manual Grinder Maintenance
The maintenance of hand-crank coffee grinders is relatively simple, but should not be overlooked. Generally, current all-metal integrated manual grinders already have high precision (referring to bearings, connection points), and many manual grinders can be fully disassembled.
After grinding coffee with a manual grinder, there are usually fine coffee powder particles adhering to the grinder base, as can be observed after grinding, and cleaning these fine powder particles after grinding is a necessary operation. Of course, there are two other areas worth noting: one is the powder chamber, and the other is the bean hopper. Even if you try to shake out the powder from the chamber by tapping, there will still be some fine powder that is not easily visible to the naked eye. This can be verified by wiping the inner wall of the powder chamber with your finger. This can be cleaned thoroughly with a brush. If accumulated over a long period without cleaning, the powder chamber can easily develop stale oil flavors.
The bean hopper is the most easily overlooked area. In fact, during grinding, some fine powder and debris also remain in the burr set. Ordinary fine powder can be resolved by spraying air into the bean hopper with a blower, while some debris stuck on the burrs (causing a jamming sensation when turning the grinder) requires adjusting the grinder to a coarser setting. After the debris passes through smoothly, adjust back to the original setting, turn the grinder several dozen times, and confirm there are no foreign objects.
Next is disassembly maintenance. Disassembly cleaning does not need to be done after every grinding session. If used frequently, cleaning by disassembly about once every two weeks is sufficient. If the grinder needs to be stored for a period without use, it also needs to be disassembled and cleaned before storage.
Disassembly cleaning mainly focuses on cleaning coffee residue on the bearings and burr set. This part is difficult to clean without disassembly. At the same time, pay attention to the wear degree of the burrs. Burrs are consumable parts. If used frequently, after 2 years, the burrs will have some wear, with the most obvious impact being grinding precision (increased fine powder). Therefore, they need to be replaced regularly.
As for questions like "Can it be washed with water after disassembly?" FrontStreet Coffee recommends consulting the grinder manufacturer. Currently, FrontStreet Coffee has tested stainless steel manual grinders that can be washed with water, but it's important to ensure that all components are completely dry before reassembly. If the bearings are stainless steel, they also need regular lubrication. When you feel resistance when idling the grinder, it indicates the bearings need oil.
Electric Grinder Maintenance
Electric grinder maintenance is similar to manual grinder maintenance, involving cleaning of fine powder residue, burr maintenance, and circuit inspection.
Basically, no matter how high-quality the electric grinder, they all have the common problem of "retaining grounds" (it's just a matter of how much). However, if the grinder is not cleaned regularly, the problems of "retaining grounds" and "expelling old grounds" will become increasingly serious.
"Retaining grounds": Refers to when 1 unit of coffee beans grinds into less than 1 unit of coffee powder, with the missing portion trapped inside the grinder.
"Expelling old grounds": Refers to when 1 unit of coffee beans grinds into more than 1 unit of coffee powder, with the excess possibly being old coffee powder hidden inside the grinder.
To address this issue, before formal grinding, use a small amount of coffee beans for a "purging grind" step to ensure no flavor contamination. After grinding, also use a blower to blow away residue from the powder outlet.
For friends who are not familiar with mechanics, FrontStreet Coffee does not recommend self-disassembly (based on FrontStreet Coffee's experience, there are always a few small parts left over after reassembly). To clean fine powder debris inside the burr set, you can use specialized cleaning powder for grinding and cleaning.
If you feel that the coffee grounds you grind one day produce different brewing results than usual, this proves that your grinder needs deep cleaning.
Another point to note for electric grinders is circuit issues. Regularly checking the grinder's circuit condition can prevent many accidents, such as mice chewing wires, broken ground wires, aging wires, and other problems.
