Can You Add Milk and Latte Art to Moka Pot Coffee? Moka Pot Brewing Tutorial

Published: 2026-01-27 Author: FrontStreet Coffee
Last Updated: 2026/01/27, Many people entering the world of espresso coffee start with a moka pot. Everyone knows that semi-automatic espresso machines are great, but reliable machines cost thousands of yuan, which discourages beginners. The moka pot, a relatively niche tool in China, has become the gateway for espresso beginners
Moka Pot

FrontStreet Coffee's baristas often hear customers jokingly refer to the moka pot as a budget-friendly alternative to espresso machines. After all, compared to the thousands of dollars required for an entry-level espresso machine, a moka pot costing several hundred yuan seems quite appealing. Many friends have probably wanted to try it out - can coffee brewed with a moka pot be used for latte art? What exactly are the differences in latte art between coffee brewed with a moka pot and espresso extracted from an espresso machine? Today, FrontStreet Coffee will conduct an experiment: comparing latte art with coffee from a moka pot versus espresso from an espresso machine to answer everyone's questions about moka pot latte art.

FrontStreet Coffee will use Sunflower Warm Sun Blend espresso beans for both extractions, and both latte art creations will use milk foam of the same quality and similar latte art techniques.

Step 1: Brew coffee with a moka pot; extract espresso with an espresso machine

Step 2: Froth two portions of milk foam using the espresso machine's steam wand

Step 3: Create latte art in the cups

Lathe Art Results

Comparing the two latte art patterns, the latte art on the moka pot coffee appears much lighter in color, with unclear pattern edges and weak contrast. Meanwhile, the pattern on the espresso is much clearer with stronger color contrast.

This is because the coffee liquid from the moka pot lacks rich crema (the crema dissipates about ten seconds after pouring the coffee from the moka pot). In contrast, the espresso has a thick layer of crema. During latte art, the thick crema increases the coffee's viscosity. The higher the viscosity, the greater the fluidity, making latte art easier and creating clearer pattern lines.

Crema Comparison

Espresso extracted from an espresso machine is made by forcing hot water at approximately 90°C through a compacted coffee puck at about 9-12 bars of pressure, while a moka pot can only provide about 1-2 bars of pressure. When using the same coffee beans, coffee extracted at higher pressure is more aromatic and rich, with more abundant and delicate crema. With more crema, the coffee surface is more stable, making latte art naturally easier and the patterns clearer and more attractive.

From this experimental comparison, although coffee brewed with a moka pot doesn't perform as well as espresso in terms of latte art effects and flavor expression, if you're simply aiming to create patterns and get a decent-tasting milk coffee, using a moka pot to make coffee is still a good option!
