The biggest difference between drip bag coffee and freshly ground pour-over coffee is that drip bags belong to pre-ground coffee. Is there really that much difference between pre-ground and freshly ground coffee? Well, there is definitely some difference!
After coffee beans are roasted, they contain a large amount of carbon dioxide, which helps preserve the coffee's flavor and aroma. When coffee beans are ground into particles, the increased surface area accelerates the release of flavor and aroma. The production of drip bag coffee requires grinding the beans into suitable particles in advance, then placing them in dedicated filter bags and individually sealing them.
Although sealed, the flavor and aroma of drip bag coffee dissipate faster than whole beans, so the optimal tasting period for drip bag coffee is around 20-25 days.
On the other hand, freshly ground coffee means grinding coffee beans into particles only when you're about to brew. Before this point, the coffee beans remain whole, which better preserves the aromatic compounds. Therefore, freshly roasted and properly sealed whole beans have an optimal tasting period of about 30-45 days.

Drip Bag Coffee vs Instant Coffee
Drip bag coffee differs from instant coffee. The particles in drip bag coffee are actual ground coffee beans, mostly composed of woody fibers, so they cannot dissolve directly in water. Instant coffee, however, is made by grinding roasted coffee beans under specific temperature and pressure, extracting the effective components into water, and then drying the extract. This is why instant coffee can dissolve directly in water.
Both drip bag coffee and instant coffee have their own merits. Coffee brewed from drip bags has more pronounced aroma and richer, fuller body – it's black coffee without milk or sugar, which you can add if desired. Instant coffee excels in convenience and affordability, but it often contains various vegetable fats and sugars, so FrontStreet Coffee does not recommend long-term consumption!
Brewing Method for Drip Bag Coffee
1. Prepare a straight-walled cup, pour hot water to warm it, then discard the water.
2. Open the package and take out the drip bag. Tear along the dotted line above, then pull out the small "ears" and hang them on the rim of the cup.
3. Use water at 92°C (if you don't have a thermometer, just use boiled water)
4. Use a fine stream of water to wet the coffee grounds with about 20ml of hot water and let it bloom for 30 seconds
5. Then pour in another 130ml of hot water (if you don't have a scale, this is about two full drip bags of water)
If you have a gooseneck pour-over kettle, use it. If not, a regular kettle will work too. Pay attention to controlling the water flow – pour steadily and slowly in circular motions from inside out!
