Yirgacheffe Coffee: Hot or Cold? Flavor Profile, Brewing Methods, and Temperature Guide
Yirgacheffe Coffee: Hot or Cold?
Whether to drink Yirgacheffe coffee hot or cold ultimately depends on personal preference. When served hot, Yirgacheffe's aroma and flavor characteristics become more pronounced and intense, with acidity and sweetness more distinctly noticeable. However, chilled Yirgacheffe coffee presents differently - its bitterness becomes more prominent while sweetness diminishes, and the overall flavor profile becomes less apparent.
Iced Pour-Over Yirgacheffe
Cold Yirgacheffe can also refer to iced pour-over Yirgacheffe, which offers a particularly distinctive taste profile. The brewing parameters for iced preparation differ from hot brewing. Today, I'll share how to brew iced pour-over coffee. Personally, I use 15 grams of coffee grounds with a 1:10 coffee-to-water ratio and a finer grind than usual pour-over methods. This adjustment is necessary because ice will dilute the concentration, so we need to compensate by increasing the initial concentration.
First, place 100 grams of ice cubes in the pour-over kettle. Grind the coffee beans and place the grounds in the filter paper. For water temperature, I use 93°C. Begin with a 30-second bloom using 30 grams of water, then start the first extraction phase, pouring water to reach 90 grams total. This takes about 1 minute. Then begin the second water addition, pouring to reach 150 grams total. The entire extraction time should be around 1 minute and 40 seconds. After brewing, gently swirl the filter to ensure the coffee is evenly mixed.
The resulting coffee is exceptionally refreshing with distinct, clear acidity and an ice-cool finish that's particularly thirst-quenching during summer months.

What is Blue Mountain Style Coffee: Flavor Profile and Production Process
A friend recently asked me about Blue Mountain style coffee. Blue Mountain style coffee refers to coffee that has flavor characteristics similar to authentic Blue Mountain coffee beans, rather than being genuine Blue Mountain coffee beans themselves. This is because authentic Blue Mountain coffee beans are extremely precious, rare, and expensive, whereas this Blue Mountain style coffee is more affordable, marketed under the Blue Mountain name to offer consumers a taste experience reminiscent of the renowned Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee at a more accessible price point.
