The Excellence of Colombian Specialty Coffee at FrontStreet Coffee

Colombian specialty coffee has one of the most diverse varieties on FrontStreet Coffee's bean list, such as Colombian Flower Moon Night, Rose Valley, Sakura, and Huilan, among others. The reason Colombian specialty coffee stands out so prominently can only be attributed to Colombia's environment being exceptionally suitable for specialty coffee growth. Not only does it feature rich topography, but it also has low latitude and high altitude. Compared to Brazil, it possesses tremendous potential in the specialty coffee sector!

Colombian Coffee Classification

Colombian coffee is divided into commercial beans and specialty beans. Among commercial coffee beans, the most famous are the three major "MAM" producing regions: Medellín, Armenia, and Manizales. Their main flavor profile is the familiar Central American style with strong fruity acidity. However, Bucaramanga from the Santander province in the northeastern region is known for its low acidity and prominent bitter aroma, somewhat similar to Indonesian Mandheling. (This phenomenon might be due to the lower altitude in the Guanxi area, resulting in reduced acidity.)

Understanding Colombian Coffee Grading

For specialty coffee beans, bean size is important but doesn't necessarily represent flavor. Colombian coffee emphasizes size rather than flavor, so when you see the highest grade "Supremo" (Supreme), don't automatically assume it represents good taste. This only indicates that 80% of the coffee beans are 17 screen or larger, which has nothing to do with flavor. Therefore, you must pay special attention to the specific producing region. Specialty producing regions in the south will always indicate the province and specific origin name. If this information isn't prominently displayed, it's most likely commercial coffee beans! Coffee beans with 80% measuring 17 screen or above are collectively called "Supremo" (Supreme), while coffee beans below 17 screen are collectively called "Excelso" (Excellent).
