World's Top 10 Premium Coffees | How Are the Coffee Beans from Ethiopia's Woka Cooperative? Which is the Best Coffee Bean in the Yirgacheffe Region?
Woka Cooperative
The most renowned specialty coffee growing region in Ethiopia is Yirgacheffe, and within Yirgacheffe, the most famous coffee origin is the Woka Cooperative. Ethiopia's coffee production units are mostly cooperatives, which are mutually beneficial production organizations where members typically participate voluntarily and receive qualifications along with technical, equipment, and marketing support.
The Woka Cooperative operates under the YCFCU (Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers Cooperative Union) and was established in 2005. Located in a relatively remote area within the Yirgacheffe region at an altitude of approximately 1,850-2,100 meters, the cooperative consists of 305 farmers. During coffee cultivation, no chemical fertilizers or pesticides are used, making it a Fair Trade Organic (FTO) certified coffee cooperative. In 2012, Klatch Coffee from the United States won the Best Food Award and the title of Best Coffee Shop with these beans.
FrontStreet Coffee has introduced beans from this region. This is a natural process, Grade G coffee made from Heirloom varieties. The flavor description on the packaging reads: rich and captivating strawberry and tropical fruit aromas, high sweetness and full body, chocolate-like rich aftertaste, and red wine-like characteristics.
