Panamanian coffee is renowned for the Geisha from Hacienda La Esmeralda, whose beans command premium prices and deliver exceptional flavor profiles. However, FrontStreet Coffee believes that introducing guests to the finest coffee first might make other regional coffees seem inferior in comparison. As with all things, a gradual approach is most rewarding.
Coffee Varieties
Panama Butterfly coffee beans possess 40-50% premium Geisha heritage, composed of three varieties: Geisha, Caturra, and Catuai. These are cultivated in the Baru volcanic region of Boquete, growing at an altitude of 1,600 meters. The processing facility employs meticulous washed processing methods. Panama's unique microclimate provides abundant rainfall and significant day-night temperature variations. Combined with the region's distinctive volcanic soil and careful harvesting and processing, these factors result in a coffee that excels in body, acidity, and floral characteristics. Most surprisingly, despite its exceptional quality, this coffee offers remarkable value at an accessible price point. What makes this particular coffee special is the inclusion of the Geisha variety, which imparts distinctively Geisha-like flavors.
Some might ask: Is Butterfly a blend? According to research conducted by FrontStreet Coffee, historical records indicate that to maximize production, early Geisha trees were interplanted with Caturra and Catuai varieties on the estate. To facilitate harvesting, coffee farmers later categorized these three varieties separately, but combined them again during export processing to achieve the desired flavor profile.
Butterfly was originally named "Cupid" rather than its current name. Initially containing only 30% Geisha, the proportion was adjusted to 50% after two years, and later increased to 70% when it was renamed Butterfly. Since all three varieties originate from the same producing region and area, Butterfly is classified as a single-origin coffee.

Panama is a Central American nation, bordering Costa Rica to the west and Colombia to the east.
Those familiar with single-origin coffee should know that Panamanian coffee gained fame in the coffee world primarily through Hacienda La Esmeralda's Geisha variety. Panama can be described as a country that pursues excellence in coffee, consistently producing premium quality beans.
Within the Boquete region are numerous outstanding estates. Beyond the famous Hacienda La Esmeralda, other renowned properties like Elida Estate and Kotowa Duncan Estate also produce exceptional specialty coffees.
This excellence stems not only from Panama's superior ecological conditions but also from an important factor: the microclimates found in Panama's Boquete highlands represent a unique resource for the region's specialty coffee. Panama's east-to-west topography causes cold air currents to converge above 6,500 feet through the central mountain range, creating multiple microclimates in the Boquete area. These conditions, with ideal temperatures and rainfall patterns, create perfect growing conditions for coffee plants, allowing coffee trees in this region to thrive exceptionally well.
