What Makes Good Blue Mountain Coffee?

First, we need to understand the Jamaican government's classification system for Blue Mountain coffee. Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee represents the highest grade. Within Blue Mountain and High Mountain coffee categories, there are four sub-grades ranked by quality from highest to lowest: NO.1, NO.2, NO.3, and PB (Peaberry). According to CIB standards, only coffee grown above 666 meters altitude can be called Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. The supreme among coffee treasures is produced in the 2000-2256m mountainous region of Jamaica's Blue Mountains. Due to its precarious mountain location, low yield, large beans, excellent quality, and balanced flavor with appropriate acidity, bitterness, aroma, richness, and sweetness, it's globally recognized as supreme. This is why National Treasure Blue Mountain No.1 commands the highest price among all Blue Mountain coffees.

Jamaica High Mountain Coffee

Coffee produced below 666 meters in Jamaica's Blue Mountain region is called High Mountain Coffee. It ranks second only to Blue Mountain Coffee in quality and is known in the industry as the brother variety to Blue Mountain Coffee. Due to the extremely limited production of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, Jamaica High Mountain Coffee becomes your best choice for experiencing Jamaican coffee flavors.

Jamaica Coffee

Coffee grown outside the Blue Mountain range is called Jamaica Coffee. There was a common misconception among Chinese coffee professionals that only coffee grown in the Blue Mountain region above 1800 meters could be called Blue Mountain Coffee. In fact, above 1800 meters in the Blue Mountains, there's only one estate: Amber. It's owned by a person of Chinese descent with the surname Lyn (Lin), whose ancestral home is Guangdong, China. This estate has only 30 hectares of land with very limited production. Blue Mountain Coffee is mainly distributed across five mountainous areas: John Crow, St. John's Peak, Mossman's Peak, High Peak, and Blue Mountain Peak.

FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain No.1 Coffee Variety

FrontStreet Coffee's Blue Mountain No.1 coffee beans are of the Typica variety. Typica coffee trees have bronze-colored terminal leaves, oval or slender-pointed beans, tall tree structure with slightly inclined branches at 50-70 degree angles. They offer elegant flavor but have weak constitution and poor disease resistance, with very low fruit yield per tree.

A characteristic of Typica trees is their reddish-brown leaf tips, earning them the name "red-topped coffee." The opposite leaves of coffee trees are long-oval with smooth surfaces, long terminal branches with few side branches. The flowers are white, blooming at the base where leaf stems connect to branches. Mature coffee cherries resemble cherries and are bright red.

The Four Major Estates of Jamaica Blue Mountain
