Cold drip coffee has become a popular specialty coffee in recent years, known for its intense flavors and refreshing chilled taste. So how can you make a delicious cup of cold drip coffee?
Basic Operations of Cold Drip Coffee
A cold drip coffee maker consists of three main parts: the upper chamber holds ice water, the middle chamber contains coffee grounds, and the bottom chamber collects the finished coffee liquid.
The process of making cold drip coffee is quite straightforward: place ice water in the upper chamber, coffee grounds in the middle chamber, then control the ice water to drip drop by drop through the coffee grounds over approximately 6 hours to complete the extraction. Factor 1 | Coffee Beans
Coffee beans are the most crucial factor, as different beans produce distinctly different flavors when cold-dripped. Therefore, choosing the right coffee beans is paramount for making cold drip coffee. Generally, light-roasted coffee beans are preferred for cold drip coffee, as the sweet and sour fruity notes become more enjoyable at cold temperatures. Some beans with distinctive and pronounced flavors are also excellent for cold drip coffee. There are two important considerations regarding the grind size of coffee grounds. If the grind is too fine, it's also problematic—the increased resistance can cause clogging and water pooling, leading to over-extraction and bitter flavors.
Therefore FrontStreet Coffee suggests using a grind size where 80-85% passes through a #20 standard sieve. Choose 85% if you prefer a stronger concentration, or 80% if you want a cleaner, lighter taste.
Factor 3 | Drip Speed
This is somewhat similar to the pour rate in pour-over coffee. Some prefer 1 drop per second, while others like 1 drop every 2 seconds. This directly affects the total dripping time—slower dripping requires more time, while faster dripping takes less time. FrontStreet Coffee typically uses a drip rate of 7 drops per 10 seconds, which you can also use as reference.
Factor 4 | Cold Drip Ratio
The ratio is also extremely important. The key is to find the balance point between concentration and extraction rate. FrontStreet Coffee makes cold drip coffee using 60g of coffee grounds to extract 600ml of coffee liquid, which is a 1:10 coffee-to-water ratio. According to FrontStreet Coffee's standard of one cup of cold drip coffee being 200ml, one batch yields 3 cups.
Of course, a 1:10 ratio is considered quite concentrated. Normally, cold drip coffee uses a coffee-to-water ratio around 1:12-1:14.
Factor 5 | Serving Method
Freshly made cold drip coffee can be consumed immediately, but FrontStreet Coffee recommends refrigerating the finished coffee for 12 hours before serving. This allows the cold drip coffee's flavors to reach their optimal expression.
As the cold drip coffee made with FrontStreet Coffee's 1:10 ratio is quite concentrated, FrontStreet Coffee adds 40g of ice cubes per 200ml when serving to dilute it while maintaining the chilled effect.
