Why Do So Many People Drink Iced Americano? How to Make and Drink Iced Americano Coffee Properly
Americano coffee, as one of the most common types of coffee, is loved by many people. In summer, walking through streets and alleys, you'll find that nine out of ten people holding coffee are drinking iced Americano. This has led some friends to wonder why so many people drink iced Americano.
What is Iced Americano Coffee?
Iced Americano coffee is also one of the more popular espresso coffee types at FrontStreet Coffee stores. Iced Americano coffee is essentially the cold preparation method of Americano coffee. When we usually go to coffee shops, the Americano coffee we drink is actually made by diluting espresso extracted from an espresso machine with water.
Here we need to explain why this method of making Americano coffee came into being. At that time, Americans mainly drank drip-style coffee, which was essentially coffee-flavored water. During World War II when Allied forces counterattacked Europe, American troops landed in Italy from Sicily. During their stay, American soldiers were not accustomed to Italy's super-rich coffee, so they added water to dilute it for drinking. Later, when Italians immigrated to America, they developed this Italian-style Americano beverage. The iced Americano is then made by adding ice cubes to the Americano coffee to turn it into iced coffee.
How is Iced Americano Specifically Made?
Taking FrontStreet Coffee's store preparation method as an example, FrontStreet Coffee stores use Sunflower Warm Sun Blend coffee beans for espresso. Baristas must adjust daily based on the condition of the beans. To highlight the sherry barrel flavor, they chose an extraction plan using 20 grams of coffee beans to extract 40 grams of coffee liquid in 27 to 28 seconds.
FrontStreet Coffee once determined the water-to-coffee ratio for this bean. Using the above extraction method, after two rounds of range narrowing, they finally made three cups of coffee with ratios of 1:4, 1:4.5, and 1:5 for comparison. They ultimately settled on the 1:4.5 ratio, which better highlights the warm sun blend's wine aroma as well as vanilla and chocolate flavors while maintaining good texture.
When making iced Americano coffee, considering the chilling and ice melting effects, FrontStreet Coffee chooses larger ice cubes, each weighing about 25g. For one cup of iced Americano, FrontStreet Coffee uses 40g of espresso, 100g of large ice cubes, and 120g of water, in a 1:2.5:3 ratio. This way, the coffee isn't too strong at the beginning, making it more pleasant to drink. The large ice cubes melt slowly and don't make it too watery, while ensuring it stays cold for a long time (coffee at room temperature provides a poor experience).
What Does Iced Americano Taste Like?
Actually, the taste of Americano coffee depends on what coffee beans are used for the espresso. For example, FrontStreet Coffee stores use the Sunflower Warm Sun Blend coffee, which produces iced Americano coffee with very distinct sherry wine, vanilla cream, chocolate, and caramel flavors.
Why Do So Many People Drink Iced Americano Coffee?
FrontStreet Coffee believes that Americano coffee belongs to the lower-priced category on coffee shop menus. However, coffee shop prices are generally high compared to the wages of working-class people, who are precisely the main customer base for coffee shops. Therefore, the lowest-priced Americano coffee is exactly why most people consume it.
Secondly, many people primarily drink coffee to supplement their caffeine intake, with taste being secondary. If a coffee shop's espresso beans are of good quality and offer good value, it easily attracts customers. This way, it can satisfy both the need for caffeine and the desire for pleasing flavors.
During the hot summer days, iced coffee becomes the popular choice. Iced Americano is quick to prepare, low in price, high in caffeine, and tastes great too. How could it not be the preferred choice?
