Introduction to Blue Mountain Coffee
Blue Mountain Coffee refers to coffee brewed from coffee beans grown in Jamaica's Blue Mountains. These are further categorized by grade into Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee and Jamaica High Mountain Coffee. The Blue Mountain range where Blue Mountain Coffee is cultivated is located on the island of Jamaica, reaching altitudes of over 2,100 meters. The mountains are covered with fertile volcanic soil, and since the range is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, the air here is exceptionally clean and humid, providing coffee trees with ample moisture and nutrients. The cultivation of Blue Mountain Coffee can be traced back to the early 18th century, but it truly gained international recognition in 1953.
Due to Jamaica's limited land area, high-quality coffee can only be grown in high-altitude regions. The entire island only has the Blue Mountain range with such altitudes, so the actual production of high-quality coffee beans is limited. Therefore, the newly established Coffee Industry Board (CIB) of Jamaica (founded in 1948) began to implement detailed divisions for coffee production throughout the Blue Mountain range, with the aim of earning more money by selling limited coffee beans at different prices based on different grades. At that time, the CIB mainly established grade classification, upgrading of cultivation techniques, grading of Blue Mountain coffee beans, quality control for exported Blue Mountain coffee beans, and certification.
Classification and Growing Regions
The entire Blue Mountain range has an elevation of 2,256m. The local government has designated areas above 1,700m elevation as natural ecological reserves, where economic crop cultivation is prohibited. As we all know, high-quality coffee beans depend on the day-night temperature differences brought by high altitudes to slow down growth rates, thereby developing more coffee flavors. Therefore, the CIB stipulated that only coffee trees grown between 910m-1,700m can be called "Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee." Those grown at elevations between 460m-910m can only be sold under the name "Jamaica High Mountain Coffee"; those below 460m can only be sold under the name "Jamaica Prime Coffee."
Brewing Method for Blue Mountain Coffee
So how should Blue Mountain Coffee be brewed?
Blue Mountain No. 1 Coffee has a very clean flavor profile and is highly suitable for pour-over brewing. FrontStreet Coffee recommends using a KONO dripper, brewing temperature: 88-87°C, coffee amount: 15 grams, brew ratio: 1:15, recommended grind size: medium grind (BG 6W: 75% pass rate through China standard #20 sieve). FrontStreet Coffee's brewing method: Bloom with 30g of water for about 30 seconds, then slowly pour 95g of water in small circular motions at the center (dividing at 125g total water), wait until the water level drops to just before exposing the coffee bed, then pour water again until reaching 230g total. Remove the dripper when the water level drops to just before exposing the coffee bed (timing starts from the beginning of blooming), total extraction time: 2'05".
